78.0. "EQUESTRIAN DIGEST Introduction" by PBSVAX::WILPOLT () Wed Jun 11 1986 20:59

There is an "Equestrian Digest" that is a public distribution
list on USENET (that is, it is not restricted to Digital!).
The Digest tends to come out every couple of weeks, and it is
simply a running discussion of horsey topics. The Digest has
existed for about six months now, and has readers all over the
U.S., perhaps worldwide. I apologize for not sharing it with
you sooner!

I am posting the two "Sampler" issues of the Digest here. These
samplers contain articles from the Digests that have come out up
to now, so that new readers (like you!) can catch up on most of
the discussions happening in the Digest without having to read
24 old issues! You can join in on these discussions, but remember
that some of the material in the Samplers is quite old!

Rather than having all the Notes-file readers subscribe independently
to the Digest, I suggest that we have one or two subscribers who
then post the Digest to the Notes file. This way, we will avoid
adding to the already heavy traffic on our gateway, DECWRL::, and
will make life easier for Ken Rossen, who runs the Digest. Also,
you only have to read the notes file to keep up to date on topics
in both the Notes-file and the Digest.

I hereby volunteer to post the Digest as soon as I receive it, and I
will find someone else to post it if I am out of town or otherwise
unable to post promptly.

Of course, I encourage all of you to participate as active members
of the Digest. To do this, simply respond to the Digest articles
by sending mail to:

	RHEA::DECWRL::"[email protected]"

and your submission will appear in a later issue of the Digest
(look for it here!). Please do feel free to write in and introduce
yourself and your horses, and mention your 'specializations'.
The first time Ken sees mail from you, he will list you as a "new"
subscriber, so that others who read the digest will know how to
reach you.

Remember that Digest readers cannot read our Notes file, so posting
a follow up note to a Digest issue doesn't make much sense. Also,
if you think that someone in the Notes file has addressed an issue
that is of interest to the Digest readers, then send mail to the
Notes-file author to suggest that the author submit his/her material
to the digest.

If you have questions, post them here or just send me mail.

		Happy reading!

    The only problem with USENET conferences is that the ones with which
    I am familiar contain 50% routing information and tend to be rather
    long (>1000 lines). It's a bit painful to read them over the net.
    An AI application is needed to condense out the useful information
    and dump the rest.
78.2>1000 lines? No sane person subscribes to those!PBSVAX::WILPOLTThu Jun 12 1986 19:3226

    In the "real world", usenet distribution stuff is read through
    a nice program that shows you the header and allows you to choose
    whether to read each article. Unfortunately, we at DEC get the
    stuff as mail and have to suffer with reading it with only the
    mail program. The equestrian digest comes to its readers as
    regular mail, too, not as a real bulletin board, so even the
    readers on Unix systems have to use mail to read it (I'm pretty
    sure of this but not certain. It's been a while since I've done
    anything on a Unix system, alas).

    At any rate, you don't have to read the Digest if you think it's
    too long!! Many people who get other Usenet stuff at DEC just
    print it out to read it for just these reasons. You can do that
    with the notes, too, with the print command, or you can extract the
    note into a file and read it with an editor.

    If people are bothered by the first dozen lines of routing
    info, I can edit it out. I included it in the new issue and the
    May 24th issue so that you could actually see how it got here, to
    emphasize that it's a "foreign" document so that newcomers don't
    immediately try to reply to it IN the notes file without first
    reading the introductory note.

78.3More Equestrian Digests coming (soon)RADON::BELANGERBoycott Boycotts!Wed Dec 10 1986 22:4211
        I have obtained a subscription to the USENET Equestrian Digest
        and will be posting new issues as replies to Note 87 as they
        are received. I will be doing this at least until Carrie
        returns from school. I have also obtained a copy of all
        previous issued and samplers which I will post as replies to
        Note 79.

        I will be updating these entries as time will allow (I may be
        slow, but I intend to get them all posted -- eventually).
