I recently noticed while my four year old Mare Tammy was grazing that she was making these up and down motions with her head. This always occurs when Spirit (her one month old Filly) is at her side. First I grabbed her to check for possible ticks in her ears or maybe grain stuck in her teeth. I have only noticed these mannerisms displayed when someone is present in the pasture with her. It is not being done in the stall or when the two are alone outside. Has any ever experience this "behavior" before ?? or is this something I'm going a little over board about. What ever the reason her "displays" seem very "human" to me.

She's probablt "talking" to the foal saying that your OK. I've had mare make sounds and motions when they were with their foals too. One used to nicker to the foal every time my wife went into the stall but not when I went in. She also put on a beautiful display of "teaching" the foal about the electric fence when they were turned out for the first time. She walled the entire paddock with herself between the fence and the foal and "talked" to it the entire way. Keep watching and listening - you'll learn how to talk to the animals! /tb/ |
