16.1 | Which Rhino vaccine is best? | NEWVAX::AIKEN | I love Crabbet Arabians! 301-867-1584 | Tue Sep 09 1986 15:27 | 8 |
| Susan, is there a reason you use a live virus against Rhino rather
than Pneumabort-k, a killed virus? Does your live virus shed?
Please let me know. I raise Arabian horses and use Rhino vaccine
the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th month.

HI Merrie!!
I use a live virus beacause I have geldings and they are in
no danger of ever aborting. (lame joke... sorry!!)
It is safer to do the method that you are using for your mares!
I think there *might* be some danger to your "babies in the
oven" if you use a live virus.
Also, the main reason I use the live vs killed is, that with
the live - you need only one booster every year.
As with anything.... REMEMBER - just because you give the shot
your vaccine DOES NOT work right away. There is a period that
is as good as not having the shot (sometimes up to 3 weeks or
more).
You may want to ask your vet when a "safe period" would be for
the new borders to come into your barn..... Since you may have
alot to lose.

| I re-read my last note....
It really depends on WHAT your using... the safest way is to
ask your vet or read the material that comes with your vaccines.
I have found that in most cases, it will tell you how long it
will be till it "takes".

| My vet recommended not using Pneumabort-K in the 3rd month of pregnancy
because of complications (including abortions and high rates of
reabsorption) that were observed at Ohio State. Any comments?
Also, alternative sources for vaccines:
I have been very happy with Omaha vaccine and Jeffers Veterinary
Supply. Good quality, prompt shipping, etc. There's also a supply
house in california - PRO-VET - that didn't require a script for
things that should have needed them (like bute and Rompun). The
theory behind this is that they sell only to respectable businesses
(catterys, breeding farms, etc). I'm not sure what their doing is
exactly legal or a good idea (the road to ruin being paved with
good intentions) but they had super prices for generics.
