2168.0. "NSAP selector values?" by CHEFS::DAVIDSONS () Thu Apr 24 1997 17:04

    What is the standard NSAP selector value for TP4?

    (customer believes it's 01, but the following NCL extract
    shows that this is not possible on DNU, I could only find
    that 00 is specified for 'network layer use' but no other
    standard values)

    So, where is a list of standard NSAP selector values?

    Thanks,
    	Stuart.

  o  nsap selector

     Default: 33            Value: 0-255 (except 32)

     The NSAP selector to use for the Connection-Oriented Transport
     Service (COTS) when running over CLNS. If 0 or 1, COTS over CLNS
     is not enabled. This attribute cannot be set to 32, which is the
     value of the NSP NSAP selector. Or, on Digital UNIX, to the current
     setting of the osi transport attribute cltp nsap selector if it
     is other than 0 or 1.

     This attribute cannot be modified when transport is enabled.

The standard value is 33 or hex 21 (which is what you'll see in most NSAP's)
2168.2what standard & why not 01?CHEFS::DAVIDSONSFri Apr 25 1997 16:215
    Thanks, but...

    What standard says it should be 33?

    Why is 01 not available on DNU?

    Values 0 and 1 are reserved for use by routing. Why routing needs
    two reserved values I don't know. -- Vince

    Assuming that someone will know and since the customer believes
    that 01 should be used for TP4... I've entered a QAR.

    Selectors above the Network layer are dictated by the implementation,
    not by standards, although some groups have trieds to mandate
    addresses.

    The customer may feel that 01 should be ALLOWED for TP4. He is TOTALLY
    wrong if he thinks it should be mandatory!
2168.6Thanks, I'll pass it on.CHEFS::DAVIDSONSWed Apr 30 1997 16:531

2168.701 should be Ok, but we did have a restriction early on.FRSSMS::CELLAMMon May 12 1997 12:3010
    I don't think that 01 is reserved by routing, if I remember a DEC
    architect thought it would be nice to reserve an extra NSEL. We had
    this discussion with the VMS osi guys a few years back when the MAP
    profile suggested 01 and NCL and routing didn't allow it to be set.
    Needless to say it was fixed and since Volvo is still producing cars
    it is still working under VMS at least till OSI 6.3.

    Nothing wrong with 01.
