On my mountain bike, I switched from a 7-speed rear cluster to an LX hub with 8 speeds. I kept the same chain. Now in looking at the new hub, I see the chain is really gouging the faces of the gears on the freewheel. It's almost as if the chain is too wide. Should I have a different chain for this 8-speed cluster or is this just an adjustment issue with the rear derailleur? If I need a different chain, can someone recommend a good brand? Jim

Jim, first make sure what you are looking at are gouges. The cogs will have cut-outs on the teeth that assist the shifting process. If they are gouges your drive chain must be making one hell of a racket. If your bike isn't, then those gouges were manufactured into the cogs. There are narrow chains that you can buy, but my guess would be that your "7spd chain" should work with your "8spd set-up". There are a wide price ranges on chains. If you decide to replace the chain it will really be up to you and the amount you wish to spend. Chip | |||||

Chip, Thanks for the pointers. They are definitely slight gouges since they are located on the gears I used on the last trip and not on other gears. I talked with Naults and they said is sounds like an adjustment problem. I'll try that first. Jim |
