3194.0. "Bike Maintainence and Repair Classes??" by WONDER::MAKRIANIS (Patty) Mon Mar 31 1997 11:48

I'm writing this note due to somethine SWFULLER said in his reply to
the "need a volunteer" note. He mentioned teaching bike repair classes.
I live in Townsend and work in Maynard. Do bike repair classes exist
in these areas and if so how do I find out about them. I bought a bike
last August. I got a few miles in before the lousy weather hit (I'm
not stocked up on cold weather gear yet; I figured I would get used to
good weather riding first than think about cold weather). My problem is
I have no idea how to take care of my bike. I would love to take a
class that would teach me how to maintain my bike and do easy repairs.
Does anyone know of a class like this??

    Thanks, Patty

Many times the community/continuing education classes at local high schools
will teach basic maintenance or repair classes. I get the flyers from
minuteman (lexington, ma), nashoba (westford, ma), assabet (bolton, ma)
programs, and at least one had a class this spring.

Of course you could ask here, youll get 32 replies with 32 different
suggestions and diagnoses....

I used to run them in the winter with the seven hills wheelmen.
It would last about 5 to 6 weeks, taking apart on major component
group at a time. We charged a large fee of $10.00.

I wish I had the time to do it again, but with kids it is difficult.

My general suggestion is to get involved in local bike clubs, there
are a lot og of good people willing to help.

    regards

HighRoads bike shop in Stoneham, MA has had weekly classes in the past. I have
not taken them, but friends of mine have. I don't have a number handy, but
I'm sure they're in the book.

Belmont Wheelworks offers (offered over the winter anyway) such classes,
including 1-on-1 instruction. (617) 489-3577 [I didn't even need to look that
up, sadly enough]

    	Patty,

Monty tech just had a class on bike maintainence. It was given by Darin
Smith and Scott Kingsman. Both work at Gamaches Cyclery. The first
class was at the school, and then they moved down to the shop. They
started with how to fix a flat tire, and when thru the basic adj on the
    bike, breaks, shifters, etc...

Thanks, Mark. That's close to home. I'll give them a call and see if
their going to be doing another in the near future.
