3176.4 | I hate the USCF | WMOIS::GIROUARD_C | | Mon Jan 27 1997 06:11 | 33 |
| ... or is it USA Cycling I hate. Ahhh, now I'm sure of it, I
hate them both.
I had to call Colorado Springs. I talked to a woman and got the
usual "don't you know anything, we changed the way we are issuing
licenses" smart-butt attitude. I believe the USCF runs boot camps
to train their workers and officials for just this purpose.
Anyway, I explained that my license expired on 12/31/96. She said,
"Oh, that's funny, you should have recieved your renewal". I said
to myself, "no kidding, Sherlock."
So, now I have it. Naturally, they have "updated" and "improved"
the form. You know how that goes.
So, instead of me calling them again (I'd rather down a shot of
hydrochloric acid) maybe someone in here can provide some clarity
on the form for me.
1) Since I don't have the 1997 Rules Of Bicycle Racing yet, it
appears that they have eliminated Cat. E. Is this correct?
2) I wish to be licensed as I was last year, but also wish to
do some mountain bike racing as well. It appears that the
part I need to check-off is the one that says Association
Membership (USCF, NORBA, NCCA) and send in $15.00 each for
the USCF and NORBA. Is this correct?
Life used to be so simple...
Thanks,
Chip

| What is Category E? Isn't that a collegiate level? I know it's
$15/association, but how do you "renew your old license" and "get a new Norba
one?
Guess. If you make an error, make them call you!
Tim
p.s. Do you hate NORBA too?

| Cat. E was the old Cat. 5. I think they still have it.
I've never been a member of NORBA and have never done a
mountain bike race before. However, I have heard that
NORBA does a poor job at race organization. People I
know who mountain bike race regularly tell me most (if
not all) events are laced with chaos and pandamonium.
If someone doesn' respond in here I'll give them a
call, again, and enter what I find out.

3176.7 | 5 is gone this year (1 day license is replacing it) | EDSCLU::NICHOLS | | Mon Jan 27 1997 15:49 | 18 |

Its gone, and I can give you a reason to hate NORBA:
The USCF/USA Cycling adopted NORBA's one day license deal.
I say mark yourself down as a cat 1, and see if they complain ;) If they
do, just tell them you're Cap-Tain Tiii (with appropriate echo, reverb, and
booming voice,) maybe then you'll get some respect....
Tim (I think it was) said $20 + $15/association (USCF, NORBA, ...); that
is what I remember from the form. I dont know much about NORBA, but it
used to be you could mark yourself all the way to the 2nd highest class
w/out anyone complaining. Only the top spot required approval.

| I think cat 5 is still here. Public is gone, 1 day cat 5 licenses have replaced
public. Boy, I am very glad I upgraded...

| All public races have been eliminated. I guess I'll upgrade
this year.
So, I guess for me to get my USCF license and Norba it's going
to cost me $30.00. Now, do I also have to kick in the $20.00
for USA Cycling or can I blow that off?

cost is $20 to USA Cycling
$15 to USCF
$15 to NORBA
total: $50 from your wallet
(or $5 more than last year.) I just found out it's ~$250 to register a club
with USCF - what they do w/ all the money Ive no idea. Secondary 80% coverage
insurance cant be that much........

| $50 is a lot. I was not happy with $35. They've also gone to free market
everywhere, which means promoters can charge as much as they want for entry
fees. I suspect most will continue with $15 + $5 late/day of.
So much for encouraging cycling at the lowest level. I'm recruiting a few new
folks for '97 (or trying to anyway).
