I've been searching through the conference for a note on what is commonly known as Polaris or Trail Quest events in the UK, but couldn't dig anything out in here. These are orienteering events where either solo or two man teams must cycle to as many premarked check points as possible, all the check points being off road. Events last anything from 2 hours to two days depending on the format. The basic skills of the event are navigation, map reading, fitness and pretty good planning. Is there any equivelant in the US, or anywhere for that matter ? I'm sure there is but I don't know what it's called elsewhere. Jed

3070.1 | still called orienteering, ive never been by bike | EDSCLU::NICHOLS | Wed Apr 24 1996 09:02 | 9
Ive never heard of orienteering by bicycle, but there is at least one string in the hiking conference. (Off hand, not sure what node it lives on.) Maybe they have some more info. Sounds neat, but with the big push to stay on trails, no bushwhacking, area closures from habitat destruction, etc etc, it might be more underground here. (I have a New England bias.) .02 --roger
