| I just bought a frame from Waterford made out of Reynolds 853 and it's great.
It's about a 1/4 pound lighter than 753 and resists denting better. The weight
is almost equivelant to Ti and it's nice and strong

| my Merlin is down at the shop right now for its tune-up and i've
ordered the chainrings. i ran the cogs all last year. i really
didn't notice any difference in shifting performance with the
cogs. i don't expect any difference with the exa-rings either.

Shawn,
I've had my sights set on a new Waterford frame made with Reynolds 753.
I was unaware they were building with 853 now. Do you know what the price
difference is? I believe the cost of a new Waterford 1200 frame is about
$1100 US dollars.
What color did you choose?
If you've been riding it lately, I'd really appreciate your impressions.

3041.4 | BILENKY BUILDS WITH 853 | STOWOA::SWFULLER | | Mon Jan 22 1996 16:40 | 11 |
| The people I have been talking to about 853 is Bilenky Cycle Works in
Philadelphia. I purchased a custom tandem from them in 94, which is
a real work of art.
They are are 5 man operation, primarily building
tandems...specialty is Aeromet. I was inquiring about Aeromet road
frame, and Steve Bilenky suggested 853, because is it now butted.
(heard last year that 853 was straight gauge)

| I paid $800 for my frame made from 853 tubing and it's incredible! In the woods
on the singletrack it handles like a dream and on downhills it's so confident it
just wants you to go faster. The frame is lugged and not TIG welded like most
frames so it has a beautiful appearence. The new 853 frame is about a 1/4 of a
pound lighter than last years 753 and it's almost as light as Ti. The Waterford
1200 frame is made from 753 not 853 if I'm correct. I know we had a problem
when we ordered mine because according to Dirt Rag magazine the bike they tested
was made from 853 but the name of the bike was the name of last years 753, so
when we ordered things got mixed up and the bike was made from 753. When
Waterford called to ask about paint (charcoal grey BTW) we asked what they made
the frame from and it was 753. They appologized for the mix up and made me a
new frame from 853. Both me and my wife have one and they're worth it!

Thanks for the info, Shawn. I don't know much about MTB frames, but $800
seems like a pretty good price for such top quality tubing and craftsmanship.
I'm more interested in road frames and most top quality builders seem to price
their good quality frames starting around $1000. This includes the bigger
names like Waterford and Serrota.
Thanks,
-Buddy

| I've used the Record crank with pick ups and noted it shifting a little
easier, but not as much as they would have believe.
As for the 853 I've only read great praise for it,but they were trying
to sell frames.

| From my research thus far, it appears that 853 will be a very stiff
frame, road shock may become an issue after riding on carbon for the
last 7 years (road). I will most likely wait and ride one sometime.
This material looks extremely intersting for mountain bikes.
