Well right now I am so involved with skiing that the only goal I can
set re:cycling is, I will buy more bikes, then change more components
and get more bike clothes and helmets and whatever else I don't realy
need but just ought to have 'cause I'm doomed with this obession ....

I got a jump on you there, High Road Cycles in Stoneham? MA has Pearl Izumi
factory seconds at $35; tights and shorts only when I was there Friday.
I too will try to commute to work, 3 days, 12 months. I dont have many
excuses either, its only 2 miles. Todays: it was snowing and still dark
at 630. Id like to become a better climber.

| Let's see..
Find my legs. Left 'em at college, I think.
At least one century, preferably more. Most likely the Seven Hills
Wheelmen Century in September, would like to be able to do the Quabbin
Century, but we'll see.
Mt. Wachusset (to the summit this time) from my house in Sterling. And
back. Alive. Then see what kind of times I can do.
Some time trials. Shoot for under 30 min. for 10 miles (VERY fast for
me).
New (probably used) bike, that fits better. Maybe just new frame*, if
the right deal comes along.
Missed one goal already: was going to take the mountain bike out New
Year's day, but ended up fighting ice dams instead. Argh.
That's enough shooting my mouth off for one year...

* Everybody keeps telling me that the new cheap stuff is better than my
old good stuff, but I'll throw away my Suntour Cyclones the day I can
afford Campy Ergopower, which may be never. So there. (I'm not a
retrogrouch; I'm cheap.)

Well try cutting the work back down to a level so that time for cycling
doesn't become an unaffordble luxury. Once done:
- Give the solo some tlc
- Lots of Tandem miles to get my stoker ready for her `event' this
summer (the paralympics)
- Lots of solo miles to get me ready for:
- A raid/cyclosportif with Robin (Marseille-Nice?)

| I can't plan for 96 without a look back at 95 -
1995 in retro
-------------
Taken overall, 1995 seemeed to have been a bit of a non-event, but when I
look at the list, perhaps it wasn't so bad after all.
Here on the Cote, winter went on until at least April and started again about
October. I lost count of the number of days we flogged into a galeforce
freezing wind along the Coast from Antibes to Nice. I had mudguards on the
Alan, and that allowed me to get out once it had stopped raining without
getting soaked from the spray on the inadequately drained roads.
I rode 2 real sportifs, the Lazarides and the Virenque. Thanks to an
overdose of work and subsequent 'flu I had to pack in the first while an
undertrained Rowlands cruised round with no trouble. I did at least finish
the Virenq, but in a pretty poor state. I went back to the UK for the 30th
anniversary of my best 12 hour race and rode that like a sportif to finish
undamaged with 335 km.
On the brevet side, I added 4 to my Carte Verte, 2 by myself, 1 with John and
1 with the CC Antibes. The best was probably the Aigle Cannois out through
Draguignan and through the Var wine lake with a thrash back along the
Esterels.
As for pure pleasure (you mean it isn't ALL pleasure?), we had the ritual
trips to Paris-Nice and Milan-San Remo which were a hoot as usual, and then
we had a late season trip again to Italy on one of the best days of the year
when the sweat dripped off in buckets. Rod dropped by and we allowed him to
talk us into a trip up the Turini where the best part of the day was eating
in Le Ranch as usual - no, I tell a lie, it was a good day out with the
chance to ride on new roads by Coaraze instead of going directly to
L'Escarene.
The last couple of months were bad again, with rain more often that not and I
was thwarted in getting to the magic 10,000 km, finishing up with 9675.
Looking forward to 1996
-----------------------
I've read so many times that Rod & Robin are going to do Marseille - Nice
that I suppose it must be true. Easter 1995 was the previous target so I
suppose the same time a year on would be OK. I will be looking for
volunteers early in the year and NO excuses will be accepted ....
Velo2000 has had L'etape du Tour for the past 3 years, when a large number of
sportifs cover the same route as a Tour stage but a couple of days in
advance. So far, they have had 2 in the Pyrenees and 1 in the Alps, but the
1996 edition is scheduled for the Massif Centrale between Le Puy and
Super-Besse. I must admit to being tempted - it's July of course, and I have
the first flyer if anyone wants a glance at it.
Apart from that I need to get 10 out of 10 to complete my Carte Verte but
until I talk to Albert le chef I don't know what events I need (apart from
Marseille-Nice and Grenoble-Nice).
My colleagues in the UK expect me back again for the Counties 12, I don't
know about that - it was good and I'm sure I could do 360 km with a bit more
application, but ....
The Coppi - I must do it again before I get too old. A great event amongst
the Italian bikies and which is not as tough as it looks on paper (Agnel,
Vars and Larche). If I can do it, anyone can, and I recommend it to
everyone.
Paris-Nice stages and Milan-San Remo? Of course, almost compulsory by now -
I do have a slight hankering to see the finish for once on the Via Roma.
This and the Coppi should give me the necessary push to get back into
learning Italian.
On the equipment side, I have resisted getting tri-bars, lo-pro frame, and
Ergo brakes yet again, but I do have a couple of new Turbomatics and front
and rear Campag triple mechs to try out. I'd love a CarboLook frame, but the
better half seems to have this strange idea that we need a new bed, and a new
pump for the swimmming pool ..

| For 1995 I exceeded my mileage goal of 3000 miles, by riding 3600. I'm happy
about that. For 1996 I'll again aim for 3000 miles.
I would also like to ride my first commute to work by bike by the end of
February (almost made it last year, but not quite; March 8th was the first;
October 26th was the last). Speaking of commutes, I would also like to ride at
least one commute with an average speed of 22 MPH or above (for a rolling 12
mile route, with about five pounds of gear). My best in 1995 was 21.7 MPH.
I hope to do one or two centuries this year. I did one last year, which is
the same one I've done about half a dozen times now, between Westford MA and
Wolfboro NH (with a few diversions near an end to stretch it to 100 miles) by
myself.
I just bought a mag trainer for the first time a week or so ago; that should
help me keep my sanity, what with the two feet or more of snow that we have
received in the last month around here.

| Well, my goal is to simply return to the shape I was in 2 years ago.
Things had been going steadily downhill since then and I was struggling
so much on 15 mile rides this past summer, that I gave up and vowed to
do better next year. In November, I discovered the cause of my
incredibly poor performance...I found out I'm a non-insulin dependent
(Type II) diabetic.

Mine hummm ... well since Greg Lemond quit to do more fly fishing
I've been ....
Goal 1: Sell or trade the Merlin road for a DynaKing vise.
Goal 2: Tie up almost all the flys I intend to use this season since
the wife will never stand for me fishing 3 times a week and
using the rest of my free time at the vise.
Goal 3: Quafe mega quantities of ale to get that conformist bloated
middle look.
But seriously folks - I'd like to ride 3 times a week or so, this
keeps me fit and monkeys off my back.

| Since I beat my 1995 goal of 3000 miles by cycling a little less than 3500,
I'd like to shoot for 4000. May get a late start due to all of this snow in
New England, but we'll see.
At least two centuries - one that leaves from Georgetown, MA with the North
Shore Cyclists and one that leaves from Westfield in October with 7500 feet
of climbing, overall.
At least two citizen's races: the Tour de Lowell, it it's on and the Peerless
Road Race in Keene, NH (3 tough hills - since my Palo Alto trip, I can't call
these "climbs")
Santa brought STI, so as soon as the snow starts to melt, I'll pull the bike
off the trainer and put it on. I can't wait! (I take them out of the box
every now and then and click through a few shifts just to get a fix!)

| Back in September of 1995 I set my 1995 milage goal at 7000 (it was clear
that I was going to exceed the previous year's 6000). Well, I didn't quite
make it - 6884. I commuted at least once each month, and ended up with 105
days for the year. I had 3 months with more than 1000 miles in them.
I'd like to make that commute at least once a month again in 96, but a
return to normal New England winter makes seem unlikely that I'll be able
to do it again until March.
I'd also like to exceed last year's milage, and complete a 400K brevet.

| I too beat my 95 goal. Trying to get 16,000 km got me 17,300 km.
13,000 of that was commuting 221.5 times. (we don't put our bikes
away in Vancouver)
For 96 I'd like to do more than 4,000 km of recreational riding and
maintain over 200 rides to work. Half my rec.kms were on my road bike
and the other half split pretty evenly between mountain bike and
tandem. Its very difficult to plan how to get more recreational rides
when (it seems to me) 1 mtn.km=10 road km. And sometimes 10 tandem km
seems like an eternity!

2. do my 18.5 km one way commute in under 30 minutes. ( I managed 32

3. do more mountains so when I visit my bro in Vancouver I'll whip his

4. start running a wee bit, like 10-15K per week.

Christmas. Maybe do a Century...who knows.
I would also like to become a better mountain biker and I hope to log many

I just started running so I would like to log some miles on foot as well.

| well, i didn't quite make my '95 goal of 1500 miles. in fact, i didn't
even hit my '94 mileage (1250). i ended '95 at 1151. my only excuse was
the abnormally HOT summer we had. if biking isn't going to be fun for
me, i just dont go. and it isn't fun in 95-100 degrees with lots of
humidity.
BUT - '96 is a new year. i'm going to aim for the 1500 again and will
do more if the weather allows it. i'm even contemplating a century! my
longes ride has been 70 miles (so close to 100 and yet so far). i've
been using a cardio-glide machine inside since just after christmas, so
i hope the legs and heart will be in tune when the warmer march/april
rolls around for butt training.
