This note is for discussions, personal opions and technical information regarding composite wheels. You know the type with very few (usually non metal) spokes. These wheels are all the rage this year at the road races. I've even seen them at mountain bike races! I'm considering buying a pair or maybe just a single. As I do my research I'll post here. I'd sure like to hear from anyone who rides these "non-traditional" composite wheels. -regards Wayne V

Well Wayne, I'm sure you're well aware that tri-geeks have been using them for quite some time. I run a pair Specialized for TT'ing and like them a lot. They're a real trip in a strong crosswind however. I've had them for two years now and have had no problems. I do wind up the rear and it creates a lot of flex so I have to open my brakes up. I think some of this is BB flex as well (Ti frame). I did run a ZIPP disk with a front 28 bladed spoke front wheel and an A/C hub. I loved that set-up too. Gerry Moriarty has that bike now. (BTW the >wheel is only three weeks old and the shop owner is going to >investigate with the manufacturer, but I wonder if this is normal???) Could this be the little bit of rim that they "punch" out for the valve hole, and which ends up inside the rim? I spoke to folks at Spinergy about this last year, and they had no solution. I found one: use a vacuum cleaner, and shake the wheel until the bit comes to the bottom and suck it out. Ken

More negative Spinergy talk from a Vuelta stage race report: ...Pianegonda (Polti) attacks from the front group, he fairly quickly opens a gap alone, rolling along on his Spinergies, which I have heard talk of banning because their "spokes" are too sharp and dangerous...

Funny report Wayne. A woman we time trial with sliced her finger open while pumping up her tire last night. I did remark that it would never have happened on a Specialized. :-) Chip |
