2980.0. "Miller St. Park Honor System Race " by SMURF::LARRY () Tue Jun 13 1995 12:31
I live much closer to Pack Monadnock/Miller St. Park than I do
Mt. Wachusett so I thought I would start an honor system bike race
(use the term race loosely here) up the Miller St. park access road.
The race begins at the information signs at the rear of the parking
lot just before the hill begins. The starting elevation is about 1500'.
The race ends at the small green building at the top ... Elevation
is about 2250'. The course is about 1.3 miles and about 750' of
climbing more or less. The road has been called a mini Mt. Washington
climb and is ideal preperation for the Mt. Washington road race.
The course basically winds up the mountain with a short flat
stretch in the middle. One of the rangers that works there says
that the last stretch (100 yards) to the top is the steepest
paved section in the state... 20% grade comes to mind.
Unfortunately this year they started charging bikers to go up the
road ($2.50). But they probably will let you up the first time for
free if you plead ignorance... they did for me.
Miller St. Park is located across from the Temple Mt. ski area.
It is right on 101 between Peterborough and Milford NH.
BTW, Temple Mt. appears to be a good spot for Mt. bikers.
To start things going I offer my best attempt to date:
Name: Larry Cohen
Age: 40
Bike: Trek with 531 frame. sport/touring class bike vintage 1982.
Gearing: old Sugino AT triple 50/48/28 ... thats just the way
it came! The rear cluster is a 13x32.
Components: Mixed bag of recent Shimano stuff.
Date: 6/11/95
Conditions: Overcast in the low 60's
Ride Time: 12.00 minutes
Goal: get down to 10 minutes so I can beat my runner friend up ...
he runs, I ride.
Notes: I usually ride from my house which is about 7 miles away and
it mostly up hill from there to Miller. I usually do loops up
the access road. The number of loops depends on how much my
back hurts! I have done at most 5.
