2945.0. "THINKING OF COLORADO MTB WEEK" by STOWOA::SWFULLER () Wed Apr 26 1995 09:23

I am thinking of taking a short vacation to Colorado and go to
Crested Butte for the mountain bike festival at the end of June.
    Three questions:

o Where would be the recommeded city to fly into?

o Are there other places along the way I should plan on spending a
    day or two?

o Anyone know of any family resorts in this general area that would
cater to families (provide partial day care)?

Gunnison is the closest airport. I think it's a little over an hour's drive
from there. It's a municiple airport, with minimal snow removal equipment,
which can make it chancy getting into during snow season. I think you're safe
in June.

Yes, Gunnison is the closest airport, less than 30 miles uphill (1000')
to Crested Butte, if you don't mind flying in a small bouncy aircraft
from Denver. In the winter there are 6 airlines that serve Gunnison
but only 3 in the summer. The winter flights are from as far away
as Atlanta and I presume have larger airplanes. We flew in and out
of there a few years ago. My wife thought it was scary, I thought
it was no worse than DC to Harrisburg except for all the Cumulo
    Granite. :-)

One more aside :-), on the return to Denver the plane made a stop
farther west in Montrose and this really large lady was getting
on, the pilot already knew he had a full cargo as well as all 12
passengers and was concerned with balancing the load so the, as she
was first up the stairs, he quickly said "Just fill in the seats from
the front, don't worry about seat assignments" Then everyone had to
squeeze around the first seat passenger.

Btw, we cleared Love Pass by at least 2000'. :-)
