| The Vineyard uses bikes trails heavily, which should work ok for your
group. I personally disliked the island, and will never go back, due
to the disrespect we all (bike club) received riding on the island in
general. They do have specific rules regarding bike riding in town...I
think it is illegal.
You should probably have a good time, provided the kids are dressed
appropriately for "locals"...
Be careful parking your car with valuables on Cape Cod, my friend had
his stereo ripped out to top our of fun weekend. New Beford boat
over was great, you may wish to check that out.

| Do you have an older jr troop or a cadette troop? I have a jr troop with
mostly 10 year olds, to whom I have hesitated to suggest such a trip. I'm
not sure they are up for it.
I went bicycling and camping on the vineyard at 12, as part of a cadette
trip. We had a marvelous time - it gave me a permanent fondness for that
island.
I have been back many times, bicycling, and have never had any problems.
Yes, there are unusual rules for bikes in some towns, but I sort of
sympathize. Edgartown particularly is very crowded in the summer, and
they have many many bicyclists and very narrow streets. They cope with
it by routing bikes onto certain streets - and routing the majority of
car traffic onto other streets. Most of the island has bicycle paths; you
only have street restrictions right in town. Just follow the signs and
you will be on the a bike path or the least busy street available.
You bike *all* over the island and be on bike path 99.9 % of the time.
It is a great setup for energetic 12 year olds.
Margaret.
