2859.1 | 1st of many... | WMOIS::GIROUARD_C | | Mon Sep 26 1994 13:59 | 24 |
| I was out with a friend yesterday near my city (kinda deep in the
woods).
We were cruising up this very old and beaten dirt road when we came
upon a Jeep Renegade - Stripped! The wheels were gone and the cap was
gone. The ignition was punched, but otherwise the vehicle was in good
shape. There also was a full case of audio cassettes (20-30) just
sitting on the ground. The Ma plate was there and the registration
sticker was current.
This was 10 minutes after the guy I was riding with was stung three
times by bald-faced hornets. Evidently this huge nest was blown from a
tree over the weekend. They were very angry. I went by and must've woke
them up. When my buddy went by they attacked.
And... He's very allergic to them! He flew off his bike and started
running. The last time he was stung he went into shock. He had his
medicine with him (thank God). It was the first time he's tried it
so we weren't sure whether he'd be okay or I'd be carrying him out
of the woods... Obviously, he was okay.
Pretty interesting afternoon!

2859.2 | Seen in passing... | USCTR1::VINCENT | | Mon Sep 26 1994 14:42 | 24 |
| - Found a Suzuki Samuri (sp?) out in the middle of nowhere - hung up on the
frame.
- One of my friends was stung by several angry bees...he was the last
guy in line. We zipped by and stirred em up, he got stung ;^)
- 5 yahoos with guns. Plenty of beer and no common sense.
- Blasting through singletrack in a field. I thought I was going to
run over an old MTB tire across the trail. When I hit it, it started
jumping around....it was a huge snake! The guy right on my wheel
couldn't stop and ran over it again...one PO'd snake that will find
another place to sun itself.
- 6 or 7 4x4 trucks, 15 guys...doing things to their vehicles that the
manufacturer never intended. Through muddy water sections up to the
door handles, up really steep rocky hills, etc. Had to watch for a while.
I left when one guy came close to tipping over. Seems like an
expensive way to have fun.
- On a night ride at Wachusett Res - A HUMMER! The driver was in full
uniform and with a couple other guys in a state pick-up truck. They were
quite surprised to see us. Must have thought the aliens had landed.

| While mountain biking in the Appalachian foothills in northern
Alabama (i.e. kinda asking for it...), I almost ran over a fairly
large copperhead rattler sunning itself in the middle of a trail.
A closeup picture of it adorns my office. That was the only one
I saw, anyhow. Kratz

2859.4 | Post-Work Amore | WMOIS::GIROUARD_C | | Tue Sep 27 1994 07:26 | 12 |
| I was flying down the old railroad beds that run from Gardner to NH
when I came upon a car. As I passed I noticed a young lady sitting
on a gentleman's lap. No, he wasn't teaching her to drive (the
vehicle). If they were, it must've been hard to work the pedals
with their pants around your knees!
And yes, I did make an effort to look. I'm getting old so I take my
kicks whenever I get the chance :-)...
Get this, he was hiding behind her. What a guy!

| Naw, I only went by once. My speed inadvertently dropped to almost
to zero :-).
I wasn't worried about either of the chasing me :-) But, if the guy was
armed... (yup, I know this one is wide open)

2859.9 | More driving lessons | SNOC02::PERTOT | I come from a land down under | Wed Sep 28 1994 01:17 | 13 |
| I was riding through a suburban picnic ground (on a cycle track) on a
beautiful spring Sunday, and the place was lousy with families on
picnics. I was with my wife and two children (then aged 6 and 8), and
was last in the Pertot procession, when I noticed on the left, a young
couple under a blanket on the ground, again woman on top, and again she
was -NOT- being taught to drive (they didn't have a car anyway).
There was only a momentary pause as they noticed me glancing at them,
and then the (non) driving lesson continued.
I just put it down to Spring, The joyfulness of youth, and the many
birds and bees that were buzzing around at the time. :-)

2859.11 | Clothes but no Body | WMOIS::GIROUARD_C | | Mon Oct 10 1994 07:33 | 15 |
| Another chapter... Yesterday morning I was riding through a short
section of woods to get to the "big woods." It's probably about
a 6 acre parcel - all single track. The young adults in town often
use this chunk of nature for weekend entertainment, e.g. sex, drugs,
beer, and rock & roll.
With the weather here in New England this weekend the nubiles were
busy with some heavy indulging. I came across and area strewn with
dead soldiers and a campfire. The wierd stuff... On a log was a
T-Shirt, jeans, and underwear neatly draped.
I looked around for the body, but none to be found. What'd this kid
do? Go home with just sneakers? I wish I could've have seen that!

| UPDATE ON THE MISSING BODY...
Clothes still there - No sign of life...
FYI for Mass residents;
Hunting season is on (bird season). However,
primitive firearms/archery season for deer
is right around the corner.
So... Be careful (and neon and noisy) out there!

| <- Clothes are still there!!!! Oh well, some critter would've dragged
the body off and dined already...
Here in Ma archery season (deer) is on. I'm running into them on a
daily basis. You can imagine some of the looks I'm getting. I always
act cordial ("Hi"), and get a hello back, but with varying tonal
quality. :-)
I carry my lighting system now (NiteRider) because by the time I get
home it's dark. But, I find myself flipping it on well before dusk
as an added (possible) safety measure.
One thing that may be helpful to other folks... With all the noise I
think I'm making I consistently startle people. I'm almost on top of
them when they turn and look. I'm not always running at break-neck
speeds either. One other thing... They're out beyond dusk and they're
not supposed to be. That scares me a little.
No real incidents to report, however. I will take leave, during shotgun
and primitive firearms season for deer, of the hunting areas and stick
to posted lands. Those flak vests are just so damnned heavy.

| One time hauling downhill on a paved but small Georgia side road at
night, lights on, there were two guys having a smoke by the side of
their car. They got still, quiet, and as I passed, I hear...
"Hoe-LEE! It was a BAH-sick-ell"
I think they thought I was a UFO.

| UPDATE: 11/17/94...
... was out in Ashburnham out in the woods. Scared up 4 deer (2 bucks
w/nice racks and 2 does). But, while riding I began to run into these
posters on trees stating:
Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy
Please come home
We love you
We miss you
We'll help you
There must've been 30-50 of these along an old dirt road. This area is
a popular drinking spot for the younger crowd. I just don't remember
reading anything about any locals missing. Interesting...

2859.17 | MTB in Holland | JGO::GERRITSEN | | Fri Jan 06 1995 08:46 | 16 |

Hi,
I'm a MTB-er from Holland and its a pitty that we haven't thoose
hills and forrests like you have in the USA. So I went with a few
friends to Belgium(Ardennes) but after two minutes I fell on my
knies. Adventure -> history. Here in Holland we have only a few
forrests and nobody is happy with us. People are trowing wood over
the "roads" so we can't cycle there(they think), but it's only
more interesting to us (challange/improve your techniek).
Do you also get this problems ?
Raymond
PS: I will try to improve my English
