I don't think this has been asked before and a DIR/TITLE didn't show
up much.
Question is - should (spit, spit) Shimano index shift levers
(downtube, not handlebar type) be lubricated? Mine's been in use for 18
months now, still works fine, but I service/rebuild everything else
regularly, so what about this? A quick inspection at the weekend
revealed that it was not easily taken apart, so what do I do?

Take the levers apart and clean the parts but don't lube them,
they don't need it. You should frequently lube your derailleur.

Don't lube or you run the risk of jumping gears. Levers work on
friction, even index, so lubing the levers tends to let the gears
change at inopportune moments. I wouldn't even bother taking the
assembly apart unless it is giving you cause for concern. If it's not
broke, don't fix it...
