2806.0. "BMW sells bikes now" by MSBCS::BROWN_L () Thu Jun 30 1994 12:59
From the July "Roundel" magazine:
BMW of North America now sells mountain bikes. Actually, just one
model and just one color (M3 Dakar yellow). It's a folding bike
with some interesting engineering: no hinges; it essentially uses
a long seatpost of very high tolerances. It uses standard Shimano
group (didn't say which one; probably LX) with grip shifts and
the usual standard 26" wheels, etc. Actually, it's built in
Cambridge, MA and has been exported to Germany (10,000 sold in the
first year; the Germans are hip to part-drive/part-ride style of
commuting). Not terribly light: 32 pounds; but not bad for a
fully functional folding mountain bike. BMW has arranged for
service at leading bicycle shops throughout the US, but the
bike is sold by your local BMW dealer. $575. The optional M3
carrying case (0-60 and back to 0 in about 9s; 1g skidpad) is
also available from your local dealer for about $38k. kb
