2765.0. "SPD road pedals/cleats walkability vs "performance"" by NODEX::CORNO::wldhrn.mro.dec.com::ROGERS () Tue May 10 1994 14:51

I would be interested in learning about experiences you might have
regarding Shimano SPD road pedals. I am looking into replacing my Look
Carbo Pros which have generally served me well with ones that afford a
higher degree of "walkability" than does the Look cleat (OK, I know true
cyclists don't have any business walking but it's sometimes necessary...and
I'm tired of the "cow on ice act" ;-). I would prefer to give up as
little as praticable in the "racing characteristic" category -- weight,
cornering, high effort cycling. With that said I've had two suggestions
from a my local shop; both SPDs:

1. Go Dura Ace or Ultegra road pedals and use with recessed type shoes (aka
MTB type shoes). Does this really work? Performance catalog says they
"work best" with smooth soled road shoes. Can anyone comment in general
about either of these -- I would be inclined toward Ultegra.

2. Go A525 (I guess a quasi road version of the MTB M525). Plus is cost and
they use the SPD MTB style cleat (so I could use the same shoe off road;
whereas the road pedal cleat gives you a MTB shoe which is incompatable
with the "M" pedals -- I do both kinds of riding and have different shoes
now). My main concern is the appropriateness of this pedal for road
training.

Thanks for your comments.

2765.1GO FOR THE ONZA'SAKOCOA::FULLERTue May 10 1994 16:276
    For weight and useage go for the ONZA's. They are less bulk
    than the 525's and can be used with off road shoes. They also weigh
    significantly less than Shimano's. Other option is the 105's, only
    one sided but will take off road shoe.

	I vote for the ONZA's too. Besides the reasons listed in .1, they
	give you LOTS of rotation. I never used SPD's (I used to use LOOKs),
	but I understand SPD's are pretty bad as far as rotation. No use
	introducing knee or heel problems by switching to a pedal system
	with poor rotation.

	You can get SPD-to-ONZA adapters that allow you to put the ONZA
	cleat onto any shoe that's drilled for SPD.

	I seem to have a mental block against saying this right (I goofed
	in the bike store last week too):

	> You can get SPD-to-ONZA adapters that allow you to put the ONZA

	What I MEANT was: you can get LOOK-to-SPD adapters that allow you to
	put SPD or ONZA cleats on shoes that are drilled for LOOK.

    Just to put another $0.02 worth in - my son uses ONZA pedals with
    Shimano shoes, and swears by them. By the way, these are on a Giant
    Sedona, which he also uses on the road with a set of slicks. He reckons
    this is the bes setup he has ever used

2765.5I'm sort of lost after the repliesANGLIN::PEREZTrust, but ALWAYS verify!Fri May 13 1994 09:307
    I've never heard of the ONZA pedals. Do they use an SPD cleat AND have
    rotation? Or is it their own cleat that will mount on a pair of shoes
    drilled for the recessed SPD cleat?

    I currently have the Nike shoes with the recessed SPD cleat and Shimano
    A525 pedals. Will the ONZA setup replace this without adapter or
    modification to the shoe?

    >I've never heard of the ONZA pedals. Do they use an SPD cleat AND have

	No.

    >Or is it their own cleat that will mount on a pair of shoes
    >drilled for the recessed SPD cleat?

	Yes. (Sorry my first note was wrong & therefore confusing).

	Yes. You have to replace the pedals with ONZA pedals. But you
	don't have to replace the shoe or modify it.
2765.7LOOK S2 SPD pedalsUKAOS::OVERMEYERTue Apr 30 1996 10:2813

I am looking for any information and opinions on the new LOOK S2 SPD style
Pedalss for road bikes.

Are these pedals easy to get into? Do they provide adaquate rotation? Is the
large size of the pedal an advantage or disadvantage?

Interesting, Shimano borrowed LOOKs pedal design, now LOOK is borrowing from
Shimano.
