| Latest VeloNews said something about this. I think it had to
do with Pettyjohn getting sponsorship. VN said that Phinney,
Kiefel, and ? might follow Knickman into retirement if they
didn't get sponsorship.
As Chip said, a real bummer.

| I guess he's going to pursue an Olympic Team ('94) birthe on
the x-country ski team - I guess he's nationally ranked for
the 10k!

| That's interesting. I know Hampsten and LeMond both XC ski.
I wonder if we'll see either of these fellas follow in
Phinney's tracks 8-)>

| According to some reading, LeMond is really committed not to
retire off the '93 season. In an interview LA stated he'd love
to train with Greg. He believes that Greg is still a tough nut
and only needs some pushing...
I agree. I don't believe he'll be the force he once was, he easily
has a chance at a race like the Worlds.
I think LeMond should hit some MB events. He's done well with these
in the past. Money and prestige is beginning to take a foothold in
the sport.
I'd just hate to see ANY of these guys just disappear... (sniff)

muscle' ... makes sense..

| Greg Lemond stated during the CBS re-broadcast of the Tour de France
that his training focus will be completely on cycling this winter.
It seems that he has to do this to beat Indurain, who is going well now
but showed some vunerability in the last Tour. If LeMond does well in
the 94 Tour, I would guess that he would surely do another year. Unlike
Phinney, it seems that LeMond still has the desire to race bikes well
against the best ( which means racing in European events only ).

No chance. I would say that it's more likely to go the other way.
Lemond will have looked at Roche and seen a man have 2 good years so
that he can retire with his head held high, and then at Fignon who
almost went out the back door. There can be no doubt that Lemond is
wanting to ride in 1994 well so that he can follow Roche's footsteps.
Don't get over-ambitious for him. I'm not talking world domination
here, because Roche most certainly never managed that in his last 2
years. He just wants to retire from the front the bunch, rather than
the broom wagon. If he has a repeat of 93 next year, then he may do
another year in a desperate attempt to try again (as Kelly has done for
2 seasons now). But, as I say, we're not looking at Tour wins. Even
Lemond admits now that a finish on the podium is all that he can hope
for. Time passes on, but it affects some types of rider more than
others. Strong riders always have shorter careers than the climbers,
and since Lemond's wins were all based in the TT, as any win is
nowadays, he has to concede to other men...

I think Lemond's drive now comes from that desire to leave with some
respect. Any athlete who retires when well past his best loses some of
their respect until enough time has gone by that people only remember
the wins. The best retirement that I've witnessed is Hinaults...
But shouldn't this be in CYCLE_RACING?

| My God Graham... I agree with you! As much a I'd love to take
mass amounts of drugs and think that LeMond can beat Big Mig,
I know it's not in him. He might have a shot at a stage (which
would really warm my heart and give him an excellent queue).
It should be an intersting year!

I'd have to say that it's his best option, but I don't think that he
will consideer them. In his eyes, there is only one race....
