2697.0. "Trails???" by KITYKT::HARPIN () Tue Oct 26 1993 10:28

    	Hi,

I am looking for where the bicycle trails begin
somewhere in Concord and Bedford. I was told that there
was an old railroad tracks that has been used as a
bicycle trail. Does anyone know how to access it??
and how long the trail is?? and are there maps available?

I'm also looking for information about trails in
the Groton, Harvard, Ayer area, does anyone
know of trails in this area?

    	Thanks for any input.

    	Barb

The dirt part of the trail starts east into the woods across from
Concord Light & Power/Concord Oil and continues for 5 miles into
Bedford. After a slight detour to avoid 3 new houses built on
the RR track right-of-way in Bedford (didn't they see that Twilight
Zone episode?), it's paved all the way into Davis Square.

IMHO, the best maps for biking (road or mtn) are 1:25,000 USGS topo
maps. Not much public-wise (underground gas lines, overhead power
lines, RR tracks) in Harvard... there are some conservation areas,
but they don't go far. There's always golf balls along the fairways
of Shaker's Hill and neat shells in Ft Devens, but...

There's an old abandoned railroad line in Ayer that starts in the
center of town and goes through Groton and right into Pepperell.
The rails have been removed so it's a fairly wide path. It's
 pretty flat as well.

    HI Barb,
In addition to the topos go to the town halls and ask for their
Hiking Trail Maps. We've found these very useful.

The Groton Town Forest has alot of riding.

In the Stow/Harvard area - Delaney Wildlife Management Area.

Littleton - Oak Hill (near Very Fine factory)

Lincoln - Go to Lincoln Guide Services. You can enter the trail
system through the parking lot across from the bike shop.

Lots of stuff around to explore....

Where in Ayer does this start? I know where the real train
    	station is.

Also, where in Pepperall does it start? My parents live
in Pepperaall, but I'm not familar with a train station in
    	Pepperall.

    	Thanks - Ann

        Well, Railroad Square, obviously! :-}

The end of the railroad bed that runs into Groton and then
Ayer starts at the wide part of Route 113 by the block of
shops and Citgo station in East Pepperell -- almost right
next to the river. There is plenty of parking there.

I've never gone all the way to the other end in Ayer.

The railroad bed actually goes north into New Hampshire
starting from next to a small factory on a side street (I
think the building is Pepperell Braiding). That part of the
railroad bed is in poorer shape for biking, but we've done
        it.
