I have have just converted my bike from a six speed freewheel to a seven speed cassette. The bike is a road one, with mostly Shimano components. I ended up putting an entire new wheel in, rather than just replacing the hub. The old wheel came with the bike and didn't seem to be well assembled. It broke spokes with monotonous regularity. The six speed set up had indexed shifting. The seven speed doesn't, due to the more closely spaced cogs, so it now uses friction shifting. If I wanted to go to indexed shifting again I would need new shifters. Would I need a new deraillier as well? The current one has the reach to get to all seven cogs. The question is, is the deviation of the deraillier per increment of cable travel the same for six and seven speed Shimano derailliers? I could find this out with the try it and see approach, but it would be nice to know first. Jeremy

You *should* be able to, but don't quote me. I'll leave it to someone who has already tried it... Graham.

re: "deraileur deviation 6 sp vs 7" No. When, e.g., Ultegra SIS supported 6 or 7 spd, there was a small piece of plastic that went onto the shifter to allow for a slightly different length of cable travel. It inserted into the slot that the cable sits in so that the shifter would have a little larger effective radius for 6 speed. Dura Ace just sold different shifters and made the "old" ones obsolete -- no surprise there. Your mileage may vary. ed
2663.3 | Six speed deraillier works ok with 7spd indexing. | AYOV16::JDRAKE | _100% Fact Free Note | Wed Nov 17 1993 07:10 | 5 |
To answer my own question in the base note. I finally bought a seven speed indexed gear lever. This seems to work fine with the six speed deraillier and the seven speed cassette hub Shimano stuff. Jeremy |
