I've just recently been hearing a noise when I peddle. The bicycle is
about 5 years old.
I'm hearing a creeking noise on the down stroke of my left leg. The
sound emanates from the left side down where the bearings are. It is a
creeking noise as opposed to a squeaking noise.
Funny thing is that the creeking noise continues for about ten miles
then I don't hear it anymore. Is it time to repack the barings? Or
is this something else?
Cheers,
Steve

Could be your pedal, non-sealed pedals need to be repacked at least
once every two years. Every year with more frequent use.
Could be your left crankarm, remove it, clean it, re-install with
proper torque. If you don't have the tools, a local shop should
be willing.
If problem persists, pull the bottom bracket. When WAS the last
time the bearings were serviced? For normal ball & cup bearing
applications (non-sealed), they should be repacked at least once
a year. More often with every-day use/abuse.
Have you been riding this machine for five years, without service?

Thanks for the reply. I'll take it into the shop to get the ball
bearings repacked. I haven't had the machine serviced since I
purchased it 5 years ago. There were a couple of summers in between in
that I didn't ride at all. This is the first instance of anything
abnormal.
