I thought at Digital, you couldn't actively solicit, though
you can tell coworkers that you're doing the ride, that you
need pledges, that you're looking for sponsors, etc. But you
can't ask, "will you give?" or even state "I need your help",
though I guess saying, "I need all the help I can get" is okay.
Don't complain to me about this! I'm just the messenger!
It seems pretty STUPID to me too!
Bottom line: you might need to change the wording and be
more circumspect. Check PPP.
Also, I personally hate your opening line. It sounds
way too negative and if I were reading this mail, I'd be
tempted to toss it right there. Focus on the positive,
what the PMC means to you, how much you raised last
year, etc.

A little post event review for anyone who is interested.
I did the PMC for the first time this past weekend. What a great
event! I had never done a long distance ride like this before and
it was great. The Logistics of the two days are amazing. 1500 riders
of all levels, hundreds of volunteers, a tremendous cause, a truly
unique event.
I'll be doing it again next year and would reccomend it to anyone
looking to raise some money for a great charity and at the same time
expand their cycling to long distance in a event built to support
all levels of riders.
I'm a little sore today, but what a great weekend!

First and for most I must acknowledge those of you who said you would
pray for good weather. It was BEAUTIFUL!
Friday night at the opening ceremonies, Billy Starr, the Exec. Director
of the Pan-Mass Challenge, told everyone to bring our ponchos and be
ready for rain. It's great when he wrong! We were also "entertained"
by former Sen. Paul Tsongas as the key speaker. It's interesting how
humorous a politician can be when they're not talking politics. ;-)
Sen. Tsongas spoke of his bouts with cancer over the past years and how
the Dana-Farber has helped him. He was diagnosed at the Bathezda (sp?)
Naval Medical center where he asked the doctor "if it was you (the doctor)
what would you do?" The doctors reply was "I would get on a plane and
go to the Dana-Farber Cancer Inst."
So, after a "good nights sleep" our wake-up call came at 4:45. We dressed
and rode over to the Sturbridge Host resort, tossed our luggage on the
truck and had breakfast. A few last minute adjustment to the bikes and
Mark, Loretta & I headed out to the parking lot where nearly 1500 riders
were gathering. We said our good-byes to the family, which included my
kids Stephen & Elyse, my parents, Ruth & Roy, Mark's wife Kim & 2 of his
3 kids Melissa & Jason.
We where "turned loose" about 6:10. Heading east on route 20. It's
always an amazing sight!
It felt a little awkward over the weekend as I was asked a number of times
about my visit to Steve's grave. Not only from people I knew , but from
people who had seen the PMC video from 1991.
By the time we reached "Uncles Stephen's place" (as my kids call it.) the
sun was shining. We visited for awhile then continued on to lunch three
miles ahead. As we had at the previous stops we filled up, rested a short
time and moved on.
We got behind a line of riders (a paceline) after awhile. I knew some of
the guys in the line so a joined in the rotation while Mark & Loretta
enjoyed the draft at the rear. Most groups don't feel comfortable with
strangers in the line. They would rather "pull" you than let you in in
the middle. We stayed with them into the 75 mile waterstop. Mark &
Loretta went ahead while I stayed and socialized and wait for the guys we
were riding with. We did the same thing at the last waterstop in carver
only Loretta & Mark had to wait for me to finish the day at the Mass
Maritime Academy (MMA).
The Brightman entourage was all set up at the far end of the entrance
road when we got there. Cheering the riders as they arrived. My kids
new more riders than my parents and were cheering them by name.
Again, there were approximately 80 sports and massage therapist at MMA,
so we headed straight to the appointment desk to sign-up for our 15 min
massage. We were also, entertained with a concert by Tom Rush. Of course
us younger ones had to ask who he was. A folk artist popular in the 60's.
Tom Rush's musical great, especially compared to revelry at 4:15 Sun
morning. The sound of "boogie-woogie bugle boy of company C" being played
over the dormitory PA system "inspiring,"...NOT!
We ate breakfast and were gone by 5:00. Over the Bourne bridge, along the
Cape Code canal service road and onto the cape. It is a treat to travel
on the cape with little to no traffic this time of year. Our family was
waiting at the 2nd waterstop in Brewster at Nickerson State park.
Loretta, Mark & I got separated from time to time, but generally re-group
at the waterstops. They actually left the last waterstop before me and
I didn't realized. Yes, I was talking! I caught-up with them about 10
miles out of Provincetown and we arrive at the Provincetown Inn together.
Greeted by.... you guess it....the motorhome gang!
We ate our fill, rested and reminisced about the past 2 days with the
people we met along the way and over the years. But, then it was time
to head down town and the ferry back to Boston. On the Ferry to Boston
we were even treated to some whale watching.
Another fantastic year!
Thanks for your support!
See ya soon!
