2547.0. "TREK 660" by 7916::RFORREST () Thu Apr 29 1993 09:41

I'm new in the world of purchasing bicycles and would like some advise.
I'm looking at the '89 TREK 660 with Shimano 600 Ultegra components.
Is this a good buy at $600.00? What other road bike models would be
reasonable in the $600-$700 range? Any suggestions on stores?

    Thanks for any replies,

    Rob,

I don't know what the original price of the 660 was. However,
the depreciation on bikes is as bad as the depreciation on cars.
That price sounds high to me, especially for a bike going on five
    years.

Are you trying to upgrade from what you have now or is this your
    first road bike?

Rob,

I agree with r that price is a bit too high. Yes the Ultegra is a fair
groupo but if it is the 89 vintage it isn't nearly as nice as what is being
sold new today.

I would counter with $300 and maybe if the seller would be willing pay for
a complete bearing overhaul (hubs, BB & headset) I'd give $400.

Before you do anything go to your local bike shop and take a look at some
of the bikes there. There are many to choose from in the $600 to $700
price range. You may not find one with Ultegra but 105SC may be good
enough for you.

How many miles do you plan to ride and what type of riding are you
planning on?

Keep shopping
Tom

You don't indicate "how used" the bike is. That is certainly a factor.

Couple of years ago when I was shopping for a new road bike, this
guy (Jim) that worked at CycleCity in Plaistow had Trek 660 (I think
it was Aluminum fram) Dura Ace equipted with Brooks saddle, he
let me take it out to compare it with the Trek 2300 which was top of
the line those days for trek, I loved the feel of the 660, I even
offered to buy it from him, couldn't convince him though.
What is the fatigue factor of a 4-5 year old Aluminum frame though.

Probably pretty good - Unless Chiappucci's been poundin' it...

I've had my C Dale for 4 years - no problems I can detect (although
    I haven't had it "flux'd" lately)

The TREK 660 was still in the showroom, unused. I plan to ride 100 miles a week,
mostly commuting...Thanks for the replies to date...Rob

If this bike has been kickin' around for 4 years, it must be an unusual
frame size or an ugly color ;^)

I believe that the 660 is a steel (CrMo) frame bike. Does is really
have Ultegra 600 (7 spd) or Shimano 600 (6 spd) components? Either
way, I also agree that $600 is too much for it. If I were gonna spend
$600-700 I'd look at something new.

    My .02...
