2541.0. "Local shop needs advice" by SALEM::GOSSELIN () Fri Apr 23 1993 15:20

There is a new bike shop in Windham, NH. The Owner is looking to
purchase a barcode and cash register setup much like you've seen at
various home supply stores or video shops. Knowing that I worked for
a computer company he asked me if I could set him up with something
useful for under $5000. Well not being technically gifted I told him
I'd ask the Bicycle notes file (which drew a strange look) and see if
anyone had any suggestions. He's interested in being able to create
his own barcode labels for keeping track of inventories and service
    work orders...

By the way.. it's a relatively new shop, been open for three years.
he's the only one that works there., He does sales and service and will
answer any questions you might have....and the prices on service and
components are good....it's worth the stop if your in the southern n.h
area......it's located right on RT 28 across from the Bowling alley
    it's called Bicycle Etcetera...

I have a friend in upstate-NY who owns a bike shop, and he was
looking into a similar system. He contacted some vendor (I forget
which one it was) but they would have provided the bar code readers,
database, inventory control, cash registers etc. All for about $10K.
I don't remember if the machines were leased or purchased, but the
whole setup would be for two stores.

I'd suggest that he shop around and seek advice from other merchants
that have this type of equipment. The only company that comes to
mind that makes retail equip is NCR. There may be a local sales
    rep somewhere in the area.

    Hope this helps.

2541.2DEC Point of Sale TerminalEMDS::THAYERFri Apr 23 1993 18:1811
Our own DEC recently introduced a Point of Sale Terminal.
This is essentially a souped up PC that supports all the
special peripherals appropriate to a retail outlet; bar code
reader, cash drawer, receipt printer, etc. Plenty of
commercial software is available for checkout, accounting,
inventory, and all those other retail functions.

I did the thermal testing (your friend would be glad to know that
it runs very cool!). I don't know anything about the price.

a bar code reader and software to print barcodes is available from
    DECdirect.

The MKO EAC store has one of the DEC Point-of-sale cash registers. It
was built by Custom Systems in MKO.

To do it all for under $5000. PC, a cash drawer, reader, a laser printer to
print labels, SW, service, etc. would be interesting.

maybe a PC flea market or used system?
2541.4how about a number?SALEM::GOSSELINTue Apr 27 1993 15:177
Is there a phone number (besides 1-800-digital) that he can call for
the MKO store or for a DEC Salesman that could help him out and answer
some questions? any sales people out there?

    thanks

The DEC POS was featured in the 12 Feb. Sales Update.

        The numbers given there are:

           Herb Cline DTN 328-3360
           Ed Sonn 223-1112
           Tony Adamoli 297-9618
           Gerry Tierney 328-3482

The unit is fairly competively priced.
A complete system can be put together for <5K.

I suggest the customer contact the customer relations desk at the local
sales office and have him ask for the sales rep that handles RETAIL
    ACCOUNTS in his city.

The rep should be educated on not only our DECpos PC but the
    application S/W as well.

Weather or not a solution can be purchased for <5K really depends on
how sophisticated an environment the customer wants to create. The H/W
is going to run 3-4K and you can usually double the price when S/W is
    added.

FYI. I would not have him contact the CBU as they will just refer him
to the local rep. He will save time if he goes straight to the sales
    office himself.

    FYI.1 NCR...DEAD ICL/Fujitsu...DEAD IBM...DEAD

Sorry, that was just Q4 induced sales rep psychosis...

    Work those hills.

I know the DEC solution is going to be great but it may
be a little over kill for what your friend is looking for.

After you wrote this note I looked in the back of PCWeek
and Computer Reseller News. There were several bar code
programs and inventory applications to work with the
bar code readers. I noticed that one had the reader as
low as $500.00 and mentioned many inventory applications
but did show the price for the software. I guess that
the software will cost the majority of this solution.

I know that we should push DEC solutions but really we
need to sell the correct solution that the customer can
afford.

Well thats my two cents.
