2540.0. "RTE 140 BEGINS 4/27!" by WMOIS::GIROUARD_C () Fri Apr 23 1993 07:16

     Well, it's masochist time on Rte 140!!!!! Yup, that gut wrenching,
    lung burning, eye blurring, heart bursting ride is back!

     Here are the details:

     Official Date: 4/27/93
     Registration:  5:30
     Ride Start:    6:00
     Fee:           None
     Starts:        Slowest riders off first
     Length:        12 miles
     Disposition:   Hilly
     Course:        Out and back
     Eligibility:   Everone is welcome

     Directions: - From Rte 2 take the Rte 140 north exit
                  - At the Rte 140 & Rte 101 intersection (traffic lights)
                    go through
                  - 200yds past the lights there will be a road on your
                    left - this is where to park - the start line is almost
                    parallel to the road.

     Every level of ride comes to this TT. Children, women, dogs, cats, :-)

     A great bunch of people and an unbelievable workout (if you're
    training or just into the sport for fitness).

     The time are officially recorded, published and posted at Gamache's in
    Fitchburg. They make copies available. At the end of the year a banquet
    is held and wards are given.

     Usually a bunch of people head to PAPA GINO's for pizza afterward

     Hope see a lot of you NOTERS there this summer!

2540.6Course?BOOKIE::J_CROCKERMon Apr 26 1993 13:329
    The road gets *real* bad between the mini-golf place and the
    intersection with Rt. 12. How much of this moonscape is included in
    the course, Chip? Does the course start on 140? From your
    description, it sounds almost like we begin on a side road?

    Sorry, but I haven't ridden this since 1978, so my memory's a little
    foggy.

    Justin
2540.7COMPLEXION?WMOIS::GIROUARD_CMon Apr 26 1993 15:4810
     Justin, you're right. It's rough between the mini golf course
    and the turn around which is right before the island (which is before
    the Rte 12 intersection.

     It's rough, but not really, really bad. If you ride the line (break-
    down lane) it's not bad at all.

     The start line is right on Rte 140.

        Chip
2540.8FIRST TT HAPPENEDWMOIS::GIROUARD_CWed Apr 28 1993 13:3112
     First TT was held last night. Conditions weren't too bad... Minimum
    wind, but it was coolish. We had 12 folks which wasn't too bad for the
    first one. Once we get into July and August we'll be running around
    25-40 people.

     They have already begun the road work near the turnaround. Some
    thought has already given to an alternate route... For the time being,
    however it's  Rte 140.

      Chip

    P.S. Results can be picked up at Gamache's
2540.9Our Loss is Our GainBOOKIE::J_CROCKERWed Apr 28 1993 18:172
    Just make it a 10-miler for the time being, Chip. Then maybe some of
    us can turn times like the pros did last year (on the 12-mile course).
2540.10intersections on course?WRACK::ZIELONKOThu Apr 29 1993 07:4711
hi chip,

i'm assuming the turn around is a simple u-turn. how heavily traveled is rt 140?

also, are there any intersections along the course at which the riders do not
have the right of way all the time? (stop lights or four way stops) for example
someone mentioned an intersection with rt 12.

one good thing about the nashua club TT course is that it's a safe course on
which you can concetrate on the ride instead of concentrating on staying alive.
all right hand turns, no stop lights...
2540.11NOVA::FISHERDEC Rdb/DinosaurThu Apr 29 1993 08:163
    The Nashua Velo have folded.

2540.12NOT BAD AT ALL...WMOIS::GIROUARD_CThu Apr 29 1993 08:459
     It's a simple U-TURN prior to the intersection. The turn is the only
    section of the course where riders do not have right-of-way.

     The road is travelled and sometimes you will have to wait to do the
    turn due to traffic. However, I've never been caught more than twice
    (in a season) having to wait for traffic. It isn't bad. In fact, I
    personally welcome tractor-trailers travelling in my direction! :-)

    Instead of going up to the intersection of Rt 12, why not just turn at
    Pop's Dog House ?

2540.14WAY BACK...WMOIS::GIROUARD_CThu Apr 29 1993 13:084

2540.19'93 TT RESULTSWMOIS::GIROUARD_CWed Oct 20 1993 07:45133
     Well, we had our banquet last night. Scott Kinsman took the title for
    fastest human that showed up there for the 5th straight year. That
    56 chain ring he runs must have something to do with it!! :-)

     Gotta get me one...

     The state has also finally got around to resurfacing Rte 140. I'm
    already pumped for the '94 TT season!!! That resurfacing will mean
    at least another 30 seconds (and it won't cost me a cent!).

     All in all, a pretty good turn out. There were more than 550 rides
     done this year!

     Here's some of the finishers and their times:
