| The current issue of Velo News has an article on the host of American
after market mountain bike companies that are going after the big guys
like Shimano. Magic Motorcycle, Grafton, American Classic, Grip Shift,
Chris King are a few mentioned. The forecast is that very soon you
will be able to buy a complete component group including drive train
built in U.S.A. by an American company. It's encouraging to see some
competition and excellent products coming out from these little
companies.

| I'd bet you a buck that if you find 10 serious mountain bikers who've
tried different drivetrain combos, at least 9 of them will tell you:
Shimano stuff simply shifts better. Faster, more reliably, in the
worst conditions. Forget XTR, even LX works better than Campy OR.
I'm talking drivetrain components ONLY here. You can absolutely find
better-than-Shimano stuff for every other department, as -.1 says.
I'd love to see someone, even Suntour, get their sh*$ together in the
drivetrain area, just for the sake of competition. Until then, I'm
resigned to buying their stuff.

| I figured that I'd renew the query of the base note and see if in the past few
months anyone has any more information or real experience with -- has ridden
-- Campy, Mavic or that US made MTB group (that's coming... ;-)?
I too am interested in alternatives to Japanese or at least Shimano components.
Thanks,
Steve
