2475.0. "Miles and Aims 1993" by MOVIES::PAXTON (Calais-Menton '93) Sun Jan 03 1993 12:54

Resolve never to cycle down the high-street on January 1st. A good
test of Kevlar banded tyres that is. Apart from the annual resolution
not to go to the Tron again, my cycling aims for '93 are:

    1. More regular commuting perseverance. I'd like to get 2000 miles
    this way.
    2. A 300k, being the longest Audax possible without seriously screwing
around with sleep deprivation and chocolate coated coffee beans.
    3. A big and lumpy trip. Calais-Menton or Menton-Geneva-Trieste look
    fun.
    4. A bit more speed. I'll quantify it as 3h15 round the
    Edinburgh-Peebles-Innerleithen loop.
    5. 6000 miles.

After last years dissapointments I'm reducing my aims for '93.

I won't be cycling for my summer hols so I won't be doing high miles
then or in preparation so I'll aims for 4000 miles and the ability to
keep up with Alan. I suppose that means I have to do the Edinburgh-
    Peebles-Innerleithen loop in 3h15 too ?

I managed a little over 2000 miles last year, which I'd like to
increase to 3000. Other things I'd like to do are:

    - commute by bike more.

    - start doing some training rides during lunchtimes.

    - ride some of the club time trials.

    - not have any more punctures (some hope).

    Well, another year is here...

    1) Get deeper into the 28 minute bracket this year (27 min. ??)

    2) Do 1 century a month starting in May (I wimped on this in '92)

    3) Don't get dropped in Manchester this year

    4) Get more than one finish RR'g this year (had 1 2nd in '92)

    5) Go over the 6k mark

    6) Go into another Ti frenzy

    7) 1 Mt Wachusett climb a week

       I'm already getting tired...

Good luck to all for '93 and ride safe...

I've been looking forward to entering this note for quite some time.
Happy Cycling New Year everybody! Be safe and never quit.

  My goals ...

  1) Get out of Cat 4! Even if it kills me! I'll die in a crash if I stay
     in Cat 4.
  2) Go to the Superweek races in mid-July. I've planned for this for 3 years
now but have always had some reason why I could'nt go. Like I'm injured,
     no money, etc, etc.
  3) Start speed work early in March instead of late April.
  4) Do one weeknight hammer session with the Scarboro club animals.
  5) Do around 11000km (~7000 miles).
  6) Think about buying the Campy dual pivot calipers.
  7) Seek out and eat the largest hills in the area where I live.

Since DEC is going to make me take 2+ months of vacation anyhow,
I'm gonna Motel6 across the country. Seattle to Boston, June and July.
That's it. No total mileage goals, no commute goals.

After totally losing out last year due to moving house just as I was
really getting comfortable with upping distances ( I was doing 40+ in
ease for the first time in years ) I moved house and it ruined me.
    Still I reckon I may have just missed 4 figures ( though I don't keep a
    record of total miles ).

I see this as being my last serious year at attempting a racing
comeback. I really want to do it, but my shift pattern is hindering any
real attempts. So priority number 1 is to get off these damn shifts.
Other than that, I want to be doing the local club TTs for a serious
onslaught onto RR in 94. No mileage plans, I believe in doing what
feels right and necessary on the day.

    Graham.

For 1993, there are a few milestones I'd like to achieve.

o	The longest shot is to place in the top three of a race.

o	To help goal #1 along, I'd like to join a racing club.

o	I hope to make 4000 miles this year. but spare time is the big limiting
	factor on this one.

o	At least once on my commute, which is a 12 mile rolling course, I'd
like to break into the 22 MPH average speed range. This year I did 20
a lot and 21 once or twice. This is my best regular work-out, what with
26 pounds of bike and another four or so in commuting stuff.

2475.9Vague aims for '93JURA::PELAZ::MACFADYENxclntWed Jan 06 1993 11:2317
While I had fairly definite plans for '92, I have only indefinite plans
for '93, along the lines of:

o Kilometrage, let's say a target of 8000km again.
o Crack the big 2500m+ cols, Galibier and so forth.
o Do more cyclo-sportifs.
o Maybe fit in a 300km ride somewhere? Mmm, I'll think about that one.
o Go under 40 minutes on the Col de la Faucille again.
o Maybe do another big ride like the Raid.
o Go to 8-speed and handlebar shifting if the budget allows.

Mainly I just want to have a damn good time again, eat plenty of good
food without getting fat, maybe fit in a touring holiday somewhere, perhaps
linked with either the Giro or the Vuelta...

Well done Rod for sticking your neck out. Me, I'm keeping my mouth firmly
shut.

o Kilometrage, let's say a target of 8000km again.

o Crack the big 2500m+ cols, Galibier and so forth.
TdF stage over the Restefond........

o Do more cyclo-sportifs.
I hear from Mr Rowlands that S.O. has added 3 more - 1 in Normandy, 1 in the
Auvergne and 1 somewhere else. I'll keep you posted. I assume that you take
back the "never again" for L'Epervier....

o Maybe fit in a 300km ride somewhere? Mmm, I'll think about that one.
As it 'appens, I have details of "Brevet du Randonneurs niois" - 320 km in 20
hours for sportifs and 2 consecutive days for touristes. This could be the
first Loony Ride for 1993.

o Go under 40 minutes on the Col de la Faucille again.
Rob is up there at the end of January, do you want to issue a challenge?

o Maybe do another big ride like the Raid.
Right on. We'll let Alan start at Dunkirk and thrash him on the Geneva-Menton
leg.

o Go to 8-speed and handlebar shifting if the budget allows.
Rod, I despair of your ever reaching O.C. status.

Well, I accepted a challenge to ride 1 century each month of the year, so that's
the first goal.

I'm seriously considering BMB.

No estimate on miles, but it should end up more than last year.

I have been told by manager that he wants me to stay at home until my
fingers heal (at least another 3 weeks). So I'm going to have nothing
to do but drink beer, eat crisps and watch videos. I'm going to come

I wasn't referring to me getting hurt. It was usually your blood we
left on the trail! Seriously, I do miss the days in Hudson when we
road two or three times a week.

My goal for 93 is to start riding more than once a week. Since I just
bought a house in Hubbardston MA with 4,500 acres of state forest
across the street I might just keep that promise. Once I get to know
the trails I'll invite you guys over (I don't want to look bad in my own

Still 0 miles. Because the NHS were only interested in getting me out

didn't spot. Since roads around here look like they survived the worst
shelling of the Second World War, I've not had the courage to put my

2475.31Welcome backIDEFIX::HEMMINGSLanterne RougeTue Mar 02 1993 05:485
Take it easy Graham, and welcome back, I'll make a big effort to put in some
more results just to keep you amused. I spent 6 weeks with my arm in plaster
from hand to just below the shoulder in 1962, so I know it's frustrating. I
managed to get out on the velo, the enforced bent elbow gave me a very "fast"
position, but it was a pretty miserable 6 weeks.
2475.32My planODIXIE::JPENNI own a looong bikeMon Mar 08 1993 12:4415
My original plan was to due 5k miles this year. It shouldn't be a
problem. Since I can't accrue as much vacation and have to take or loose
some I have, I'm taking five weeks and plan to spend them on the bike.
Right now I have a two week trip planed for the 1st two weeks in May from
San Francisco to San Diego (self contained). Then a week on
BikeRideAcrossGeorgia (BRAG) on my tandem with my 11 year old daughter.
Last night I got word of final government (Russian) approval for a two
week trip in mid August for a ride from Moscow to St. Petersburg. There
are 20 of us going as part of the Friendship Force (and also the first
bike trip the Friendship Force has put together) and none of us can wait.
The trip was planed mainly by a friend of mine in the club that is a
producer for CNN and spends 10-14 days a month in Russia. He also speaks
fluent Russian and will be our private tour guide.

Currently thinking about Florence, Ore. to Seabrook, NH, which is a
straight line due east within about 1 minute of Latitude. Of course,
my route will be nowhere near as direct.

I only have 8 weeks vacation to spend, so I guess I'll have to motel
6 it as much as possible... :-)
