2467.0. "Fitness Fickleness" by KRAKAR::WARWICK (Can't you just... ?) Mon Nov 30 1992 19:37
I had been off my own bike for four weeks up until last weekend. I had
been in the US for 10 days; the weather had been terrible the weekend
after I came back; and I caught a cold 3 weeks ago, of which I'm still
suffering the after-effects.
It was with some trepidation that I went out for a ride on Saturday. It
was a crisp, clear autumn day, with the sun shining brightly. I was
only aiming to be out for an hour and a bit, covering about 30km. I
felt really bad ! Every time I thought I had got into a rhythm of some
sort, I found out that I had been working too hard, and I kept having
to slow down. I climbed up one drag on the way into Reading, and felt
quite sick at the "top" (you could hardly call it a hill). However, I
understand that passing the "Welcome to Reading" tends to induce nausea
in some people anyway...
So, I was quite worried as I left the house on my way to the club run
at 8.30am on Sunday on a cold, misty morning, that I would blow up
completely. In the event, it went much better than I could have hoped.
I got home 80km later with tired legs, but feeling pretty good apart
from that. I had none of the problems of the previous day, and the
average speed was a couple of km/h faster as well.
Cycling's a funny business, isn't it ?
