2444.0. "Winter Trining Camps in the Sun" by KIRKTN::GGOODMAN (Born loser) Mon Oct 26 1992 23:14

There's been a few mentions lately about everybody spending the winter
in sunnier climes (except Robin, since they don't come much sunnier than the
Cote d'Azur) in the pretence that they'll get more miles in. (C'mon I know
that we all want to go there so that we can relax by the pool and watch the
scimpily clad bimbos/hunks whilst sipping at a Pinacolada...)

I was wondering if anybody had any experience of the type of winter
training camps they have in Majorca that you see advertised in Cycling
Weekly at this time of year (curiosity value only... why should I pay 200
to ride on roads when it's free here?).

The only reason I ask is that I read an article in Cycling Plus by a
guy who went to a camp last February. Basically it was a 7-day diary saying
what they did on each day, giving details on the distance, time, contours,
  etc.

Now, there is a standing joke amongst Scottish cyclists that to find
out who has just come back from Majorca, don't look for tans, but instead
listen for the sneezes and coughs of a cold. You may have realised from my
inane ramblings in this conference that Scotland is a cold country. No, a
cold and wet country. So when our now super-fit young hero gets off the plane
going from 80 to 30 degrees in the space of a 3 hour plane journey, BAM!,
instant headcold. So, I always thought that they were, at best, a waste of
time. Get really fit - Get laid off the bike for 2 weeks because of the cold
  - Back to where you started.

After reading this article, I am now wondering if they could actually
be doing harm. Well what's your idea of good February training? Mine's is to
go out at the weekends and do long miles (you know, John Ellis sprints) and
going out for an hour for another 3 nights with a little weights thrown in
for good measure. Their's? Well, let's just say that in the article they
mentioned chainganing regularly at 27mph, with the occasional 40 (! his Avocet
must be knackered...) thrown in. Racing up the local mountains and a 10 mile
TT thrown in to prevent boredem. IN FEBRUARY!!! That sort of training, that
early on must have lasting damage on your season...

	Any comments?

Graham.

I must admit it sounds pretty daft. When I thought about doing
this, I was thinking mostly of getting in some early season long
    steady distance.

However when I last raced it was down there and our club had a
very long season. The month off was Septemeber and we ran fixed wheels
through to mid december and from January we were doing serious training
(where serious is defined as enough to tire out a mediocre 4th cat)
and the racing season started in late March. So high speed work need
not be so ridiculous. But for a Brit (or any Northern European) this
    sounds like folly.

I've heard that the Majorca events by Keith (Robbins?, no I don't think so) are
worth going on. Look out in the Comic. Apparently, they have several levels,
and also encourage families........

As for the sunny Cote d'Azur... Huh! I suppose you all saw the pictures of
Vaison-la-Romaine in the Press!! I think we have had the wettest
September/October in the history of the Universe. (today looks average, tomorrow
is forecast as you know what again).

Some of the guys that I ride with went to a camp near a mountainous
area in March for 2 weeks. 3 of them came back with knee problems.
I think its a nice thing to do and everything; but I cant see it as
needed to have a good season. February or March is a long way from the
following September. 1 or 2 weeks wont make much difference.
On the other hand one year a bunch of guys got some Korean business
men here in Toronto to sponser them for the Tour of Korea in March. The
food in Korea they said was murder and they all came back very very
thin but most of these guys had a good season that year.

SO, was that a training camp or a fat farm?

2444.7Looking for good camps in U.S.JUPITR::MNORTONWed Oct 28 1992 08:498
This is a good topic. Is there any one that could tell me what camps are
down south and on the East coast of the U.S. I would like it if the
camps were in Florida, Plus around End of Jan. or the beginning Feb.
If there is does anyone want to car pool and go down. I am trying
to find enough people so it will keep the cost down.

Mike Walden usually has a few camps in Florida in the Jan/Feb time
frame. These are supposed to be excellent camps for racing by
one of the foremost cycling coaches.
