| I recently biked in that area, but we didn't climb any specific mountains.
I can't quote grades, but onthe climb from Keene to Lake Placid we gained almost
all of the altitude in the first half of the distance. One of the maps we used
in planning the route was the Adirondack Park map, I'll try to remember to look
at it this evening and see what sort of road it might show up to Whiteface.

| Ok, here's what I can figure out from the Adirondack park map:
From Lake Placid take state route 86 towards Wilmington, from there
route 431 is the road to the top of Whiteface Mtn. (El. 4867). It's a
paved, secondary road, so I see no reason why bicycles should be
restricted from the road. The map gives no information about the
amount that you will climb or the steepness.

2398.3 | Olympic bike climb? | FLUKES::SUTTON | He roams the seas in freedom... | Mon Aug 31 1992 09:09 | 4 |
| It might give you some idea to know that Whiteface was the venue for
the downhill events in the last winter Olympics held in Lake Placid....

2398.4 | Placid area is beautiful! | USIC02::MREID | | Wed Sep 02 1992 23:11 | 20 |
| I've biked up WHiteface during a USCF development camp a few years
back. Not sure exactly, but I'd estimate 7% average grade and perhaps
couple/few miles in length.
We did WHiteface in the middle of a long training ride, and prior to
the Mt we were flying 40+ down a misty mountain road when the dude in
front of me swerved and led me into a serious pothole. I don't know
how this happened - but my large waterbottle flew out and jammed in
the spokes of my rear wheel, yanking out many spokes. Follow car
gave me a wheel and motorpaced me to the group. I climbed Whiteface
in a borrowed wheel that skipped every time I stood, maybe 21 or 23
tooth cog.
The really scarey part was the descent on the backside of Whiteface;
steep, sandy, and major curves - wild! We got to practice out our
bike handling skills that we had just learned!
No problem cycling up the road; no restrictions that I know of.
Have fun!
