I have a 1991 Giant 980C Cadex road bike (carbon fiber frame, alum lugs, Shimino 105 components and pedals and an Itelia Flite Lite seat.) The Giant is a nice bike, but a Trek by the name of 5200 is reeling me in...I'm trying to put up a fight, but loosing :*) Since I will not need two bikes (if I do buy the Trek), the Giant will be up for sale. Unfortunately, I have no idea what a fair price would be. I paid $700 for it a year ago. The bike has about 2,200 miles on it and is in excellent shape. Can anyone recommend a price I should ask? I called a local Giant dealer and she wasn't too helpful. So, I though that I would try here. Because I know nothing about the depreciation of bikes, I was afraid that may price it too high, or too low....... Thanks, Kevin.

I have no idea what a fair price might be, since I live in Canada, and the price of just about everything in the U.S. just floors me! I wish things were as cheap here! However, I do have a couple of suggestions: - check the papers to see if there is an approximate average % off for used equipment (I know for Camera equipment, here, you're generally looking at a resale of around 65% of selling price, for an item in *excellent* condition); - if there is a local bike club, perhaps they can offer some guidance; - failing that, advertise it as Best Reasonable Offer, and see what you get -- just because you've advertised doesn't compel you to actually sell the bike if you don't get a reasonable offer; Good luck! Doug T. P.S. Afterthought: the school year is just about here. I know that a *LOT* of University students seem to have pretty nice bikes! How about putting up an ad on Campus Bulletin Boards, or in the local University/College newspaper? | |||||

Thanks for the response. You listed a couple avenues which I haven't thought of, especially the school bit. Kevin. |
