2364.0. "Bike Racks for Trucks" by TECRUS::MUELLER (I see the edge! I look! I fall!) Tue Jul 28 1992 21:24

I know this sounds silly, but I'd like to get a bike rack for my 1990 Bronco
(full size). Once you get 4-5 people and vacation gear inside, there's no room
for 2 or 3 bikes.

Fitting one on the roof is out of the question for two reasons:

	1. The bikes would be too high and would come too close to low
	   bridges and trees, etc ...
	2. The rear 2/3 of the truck is a fiberglass roof with nothing
	   to fasten to. There's about a 2.5 foot section of roof with
	   rain gutters. Suppose I could drill through the fiber roof,
	   but the thought of it makes me shiver.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a bike rack that could mount to the rear
gate. The window rolls down into the gate, and the gate folds down.
I don't have an external tire mount, so there's nothing in the way.

Anyone know of a rack that would fit this scenario or anything else? Perhaps
a front-mount rack?

Thanks,

Rob

2364.1Try Rhode GearSCAACT::AINSLEYLess than 150 kts is TOO slowTue Jul 28 1992 23:347
    I have a Rhode Gear rack that I have on the back of my Infiniti. It
    was just under $60 and the installation instructions showed it to be
    capable of being attached to a vertical surface. Stop by a bike shop
    and have them do a trial fit on the truck for you. I've been pleased
    with mine.

2364.2NO PROBLEM... WILL YOU SACRIFICE?WMOIS::GIROUARD_CWed Jul 29 1992 07:4611
     I had a Bronco II a year ago. If the roof configuration is basically
    the same, you'll need to drill.

     I tried to get a YAKIMA for it, actually they do have them. When I
    found out I'd have to drill holes in my truck to mount it I lost
    interest.

     Any bike shop can tell you what installation requirements are on any
    make/model of carrier.

    "too close to low bridges"

    REALLY?

    trees maybe, garages sure, drive-ups probably, but not bridges.

    Oh, and the toll booth arm I broke in Chicago... :-)

2364.4Trailer-Hitch Mount?ODIXIE::RRODRIGUEZWhere's that Tour d' France thang?Wed Jul 29 1992 10:085
    Performance advertises one that attaches to a trailer hitch, if
    you have one. They also have one for external spare tire brackets,
    but you've already mentioned that you don't have one...

2364.5Clearance shouldn't be a problemDEBUG::SCHULDTAs Incorrect as they come...Wed Jul 29 1992 10:309
    Your Bronco with bikes on it would be higher than a semi???? I figure
    that any bridges a semi can get under, you should be able to get under.
    Maybe you oughta take out that off-road suspension and stuff from
    underneath! I had 4 bikes on top of a Suburban and had no problems at
    all with clearances.... Of course, there's the time I pulled into the
    garage with bikes on the roof of the Taurus, but that's another story.

2364.6Auto rack extract...NQOPS::CLELANDNothin' special, it's just meWed Jul 29 1992 12:39171
    Well, had to do it, there are so many notes in this conference about
    bike-racks for autos, I just couldn't resist.

    Hope this helps you locate some more information about automobile racks.

    Notice it took slightly more than 19 minutes to extract all this data!
    Almost 7 seconds worth of CPU time on a VAX 8550!
    Wowsers!

2364.7I have the Hitch mount rack from PerformanceTUNER::LEWISWed Jul 29 1992 13:2912
Hi,

I have the bumper-hitch rack that Performance sells. I've been *VERY* pleased
with it. It holds 3 bikes. I've had three mountain bike on it. I have a
Toyota 4Runner.  I don't have a step bumper with a hitch.  I have a hitch mount
underneath. I did have problems with the actual piece of metal that mounts
to the hitch. It bent, so I had my brother weld a 1/4 steel plate on it and I
haven't had any trouble at all. My hitch is narrower than the plate I think
that's what caused the problem. If you have a step bumper I don't think you'll
have that problem.

 There are a couple of racks that attach to the back that fold away so you
 can open a hatch or door on the back of your vehicle. One fastened to a
 trailer hitch with the ball removed; I haven't seen the other.

 If you put them on top measure the clearance so you know what height is
 safe. Don't want to clean the bikes off on a covered bridge.

    About bridges. I'm not sure where anyone in here is located, but I can
    think of quite a few bridges in the Boston area where a Bronco alone
    would have no problems, but a Bronco with bikes mounted vertically on a
    roof rack would. It's definitely a consideration, though in general,
    highway overpasses and other such 'bridges' provide plenty of
    clearance.

Thanks folks. I'll take all that into consideration. I'll probably go
down to a bike shop and see what they've got and how it fits.

As for the bridges: Yes there are many bridges on side roads that a Semi
and even some large panel trucks could NEVER get under. That's why there
are signs that say things like "No trucks with R permits" and such. Even
some highway bridges have short clearances at the sides. Ever see a Semi
swerve to the center of a bridge unannounced???? Trees are a problem.
Those signs in front of the parkways in Boston are only about 9 feet high.
Come to think of it, so are the bridges on those roads.

Happy biking,

Rob

    If your getting a Bronco, why are you putting the bikes outside?
    The best rack is inside.

There's a connection.

     The original Bronco II would easily accomodate 2 bike (wheels off)
    under 55cm's. Three bikes were a squeeze but left passenger room for
    only 2. I had one for almost 7 years ('84).

     I don't know what the difference in cu. ft. is for the Explorer.

    A friend of mine has an Explorer. We took both wheels off our bikes
    and they were fine. Both bikes were 60cm. There were four of us in
    the car for a nine hour drive. It was okay if you like to travel
    light (clothes and shaving kit, etc.).

    Incidentally, I just got a VW Jetta. I'm looking at the Trek 3-bike
    trunk mount. I already know the Trek 2-Bike won't hold two road
    bikes with aerobars. Until then, it fits in the trunk (wheels off)
    without having to remove the clip-on aerobar. In fact, putting it
    in the trunk is starting to grow on me--for security reasons...
