2358.0. "Tour de Donut" by DRIFT::WOOD (Laughter is the best medicine) Fri Jul 17 1992 08:39

Staunton, Ill. (AP) - Europe may have the Tour de France bike race.
Southern Illinois has the Tour de Donut, where bicyclists eat their way
into the winner's circle.

John January downed a dozens doughnuts to win Saturday's 30-mile event.

"I think I found my event," said January, 35, of Edwardsville. "I'm a
mediocre runner, a mediocre biker and a lousy swimmer. But I'm great at
eating doughnuts."

For every doughnut consumed during two 10-minute breaks, racers subtract
five minutes from their overall time.

2358.1Maybe we could get special jerseys with a big cone on it?NCBOOT::PEREZTrust, but ALWAYS verify!Fri Jul 17 1992 10:068
Sounds like MY kind of event too! I've been known to down an easy half
dozen doughnuts in a break! And I'm CERTAINLY less than mediocre at
biking, and don't run at all!

We don't have QUITE the same event here in Minneapolis, but we DO have
the Tour de DQ which covers 40 miles with stops at 5 Dairy Queens! I'm
hoping to participate in this event this year but I'm not sure even I
want to eat at 5 DQs.

Considering the healthful and nutritious character of the donut,
I wonder how much biking it takes to counter the deleterious effect of
    consuming a dozen donuts.

Hunstville, Alabama has an "All You Can Eat Century" every year.
Reststop tables are just piled high with fruit and stuff, and
there's a dinner afterwards. I did it in less than 6 hours and
about a dozen peaches and plums ;-)

Is there an award for eating the most and still finishing? Or is the
    food just "available?"

Donuts don't tempt me all that much, but if this were
"Tour de Ice Cream", I'd definitely be tempted to enter!

Well, someone could rerun the Ice Cream Century - see note 734.

I didn't make the ride that day, but I did "practice" at a couple of
    the stops the day after.
