2356.0. "organization at home?" by GOLF::OSBORN (Sally's VAXNotes Vanity Plate) Thu Jul 16 1992 10:45

How do you keep yourself and bike organized?

My bike usually lives in the unheated, unattached garage, with
the little tool bag, the helmet, the empty water bottles, the
computer, and the gloves (unless they're being or have been
washed). The bike repair stand and home tools live in the
basement. Biking papers (instructions, manuals, maps) live in my
desk, since the basement is too humid for paper. Clothing can be
found either in the laundry room (to be washed) or in the bedroom
(clean and ready to wear).

A quick jaunt on the bike only requires getting dressed, filling
the water bottles, and finding the washed gloves. A ride which
requires anything additional gets complicated by the issue of
"where are the panniers this time?" Taking food only requires
one pannier, which would also hold the rain coat and tights. But
office clothes and associated health and beauty aids require the
second pannier. An overnight trip requires some sleeping gear,
clean casual clothing, keys, and maybe the rack for the car. An
airplane trip adds two complications: pedals (not only removing
them BUT also packing them to have at the other end) and more
clothing (the weather there is always different from the weather
here AND the weather will always change between now and then).

My mind is spinning just from all this writing. No wonder it
takes me an hour to leave the house for the day.

How do you keep yourself and bike organized?

    Sally,

I leave my roof-rack on my car all the time. I also leave a pre-packed
bag in my car. It has shorts, tee-shirt, gloves, shoes, helmet, and
pump. The quality stuff stays in the house. When I need to leave in
a hurry, the bike is all I need to remember.

For me, the helmet, shoes, and gloves all stay on a ledge
near the door; They're the last things I put on before heading out.

I keep my panniers hanging in my room. I drilled a small hole in
the back of my bookshelf, just at the level of each shelf.
Then I strung some nylon cord out through the hole, forward
along the side of the bookshelf, and back inward on the top
of the shelf, and tied a loop.

I keep two pairs of panniers hanging by their hooks this way.
The older pair that I don't use as often holds clean bike clothes.

The newer pair that I use more often always hold repair kit,
sunscreen, sunglasses, spare key, and spare tube in the left pannier.
The right pannier holds the commuting supplies: headlight, shampoo,
towel, and razor, since I ususally don't take the that pannier
    for day trips.

I have everything in the cellar. The cellar door opens level with the back yard.

I have a work bench with all the tools on it and next to the bench is a cheaply
put together wood bookcase. It holds boxes of junk I can't throw out. Such as
the old set of toe clip pedals along with an extra toe clip. I keep my packs
and bags on one of the shelves. I keep my winter stuff (balaclava's gloves and
the like in a paper/cardboard bureau.

Cellar??? Cellar?? Tom, that Basso doesn't belong in the cellar!!

I sleep at night with my wife on the right of me, and my Serotta
on a Kreitler forkstand to the left of the bed! Velo News and
other assorted cycling mags are within reach on the nightstand.

Cycling clothes are in the spare bedroom neatly organized so that
I may in an instant grab whatever the weather dictates.

Cycling travel bag also in spare bedroom is always packed with
everything I need should I want to grab the bag, bike, and clothes
and zip off in the car.

Alas, all my components, tools, and other junk are relegated to the
cellar neatly organized on a couple large steel shelving units.

    Regards,
    Mark
