2248.0. "Stolen Steal Thief Theft" by VOGON::REEVE (Your walrus hurt the one you love.) Tue Apr 21 1992 06:40

Well, after a bad string of luck, I would like to create a general note for
people to list the bikes that they have had stolen. I realise that it is
extremely unlikely that this will make the slightest difference to the
situation. On the other hand, these bikes must be going somewhere. Anyway, I
know that I ride one of the few Cannondales in my area, so they do stand out
from the crowd.

With that in mind, here is a list of the bikes that were taken on Thursday
night or early Friday morning.

	location: Reading, U.K.

bikes: Cannondale SM-1000 - blue hyperlite, GripShifts, SunTour
components with a smattering of Ritchey Logic, Onza barends,
		Blackburn rear rack

Dawes WildCat - yellow with red highlights, Shimano components

Ammaco TrailMaster - polished chrome, Shimano compnents,
		Broooks leather saddle

other: Rhode Gear SuperShuttle bike rack for car boot

Thanks,
Tim

Good question. I'm really just testing the water here to see whether people
feel that this is a useful addition to the file. I know from looking through
here on a regular basis that many of us have lost bikes. The question is can we
do anything to ameliorate the situation. Certainly, I have no problem adding
the serial numbers of these ones. However, I'll have to get them from home.
Another option would be to provide a template for entries so that there was a
uniform presentation to the info. How can you tell I'm being influenced by the
sheets the police get you to fill in? Anyway, the bottom line for me is that I
have had four bikes stolen in six months. In each case, they were locked
securely to immoveable objects, yet there was no evidence left of any lock
cutting! So, I'm looking for ways to help. Any more suggestions?

Thanks,
Tim

Might try picking up (literally) a CobraLinks lock, at least for home. A
friend has one for his motorcycle - seems quite substantive. The links are
about 1 1/2" in dia., joined by a ball-socket arrangement of some type.
The whole lock weighs in at about 20 lb., cost around 150$. I believe you'd
have to be real dedicated to chomp thru one o' these....

Wonder if they're using the same approach which makes Kryptonite, etc., lock
warranties invalid in New York City... Liquid nitrogen on the lock, then a
sharp blow with a hammer......

Seems like this would leave a few shattered pieces around, though...

Sorry to hear the bad news.
