2246.0. "Lon Haldeman's Daughter Dies" by LJOHUB::CRITZ () Thu Apr 16 1992 15:23
While in Irvine, CA, last year for RAAM '91, I saw
Susan Notorangelo and Lon Haldeman. They were right
around the corner from us in the parking lot. They
had their baby daughter Ericka with them, too. I was
tempted to go over, introduce myself, and see the baby.
See, that's what you do when you love children, especially
babies, like I do.
Sadly, I read in the latest BICYCLING that Ericka died in
February of this year of infantile Lou Gehrig's disease.
She was 11 months old. In the article on the PAC ride,
Lon mentioned that children with this disease rarely live
past 2 years.
Sad news.

I saw that article in Bicycling too. And I've actually held
Ericka. Last summer at a bike picnic in Illinois I gave Susan
and Lon a chance to eat their lunch (at the potluck after the
ride) by holding Ericka and walking around the park with her.
In spite of her age she was unable to hold up her head and
had difficulty breathing. Susan told me that she had MD and
that she probably wouldn't see her second birthday. I guess
Lou G's disease must be related, don't know.
As I walked around the park, I thought to myself that it was
a terribly cruel irony that Ericka's parents should be such
incredible athletes and the disease be so disabling.
I will always remember the pain and strain on their faces.
