Because I've helped in the past, I got a letter in the mail yesterday looking
for people to help them do the mailing Mar 18th in Needham starting at 6pm.
I've created a .DIS of people who have been involved with the PMC to
"pass-a-long" any info I might get/hear.  I'll add your name to my list.

|  |     When I entered the MS 150 last year, I called Personnel to get a
    clarification on the matching gift program.  I was told that Digital
    would only match gifts of $15 or more.  Since I expected most of my
    pledges to be $5-10, my Personnel rep told me to collect the pledges,
    but only submit one pledge, for the total amount.  
    
    After I submitted my pledge sheet to MS (with the one line item for the
    total amount pledged) plus the matching gift form and a check for the 
    total amount, I received a letted back from MS saying that Digital had 
    rejected my matching gift form.  DEC wanted an itemized list of all the 
    employees who contributed, and their badge numbers.  I'm glad this was 
    for a good cause, because it was a pain in the *ss.
    
    My advice would be to submit one line item for the amount for DEC to
    match, and attach a sheet with the names, badge numbers, and amounts
    donated by each DEC employee.

	Thanks for the Telephone number.  I called today and found out the 
following.
	First:  The PMC is to be held Aug 8+9. 
	Second: A Digital employee must get donations totaling 800.00 
		(including maching gift). 
	Third:  For the first time this year the rider can put the 
		uncollected pledges can be put on your credit card (MC/VISA only)
		and you will have 3 months to collect from your people before 
		they will hit your account.
		( this is only for firest time riders )
	Forth: 	The ride this year has a cutoff of 1500 riders. They expect 
		to fill up well before the ride.  
	I have never done a Centry before and I'm really looking forward to 
this years ride. I will Gladly accept any pledges from now to ride day, so don't
be shy.

|  |     Hi,
    
    I raised money for charity last year, and used the matching gift
    program.  The maximum amount DEC will contribute per BADGE number 
    (not per charitable event) is $1000.  The easiest things to do are:
    
    1. Submit one form (as was previously suggested) with your badge number
       on the form.
    2. Include a list of all those DEC employees supporting your cause with
       BADGE, NAME, AMOUNT.... This means when you are collecting the money
       from the DEC folks, ask for the badge number UP FRONT.  It'll save
       you time down the road.
    3. NOTE:  DEC sends the matching gift money to the charity on a 
       quarterly basis.  So, if you submit your form in August, the
       charity will not receive the matching gift money until late Sept,
       early OCT.  Make sure your charity understands this, and verify this
       with DEC's matching gift office (The phone number is on the matching
       gift form).
    4. TRY TO COLLECT ALL YOUR MONEY UP FRONT.  MOST FOLKS WILL PAY UP
       FRONT.
    5. Remind the DEC employees that any contribution is a TAX write-off.
    6. Remind the DEC employees that you are submitting a form for them,
       and they do not have to.
    7. DEC will only match contributions from DEC employees.  Any non-Dec
       employees donations will not be matched.
    8. In the event you raise more than $1000 (which means $2000 to your 
       charity - ie $1000 from DEC employees; $1000 from matching gift),
       ask each employee after the $1000 mark, to submit their own matching
       gift form, and provide your charity with this employee's name and
       badge number.

|  |     actually, after I hit the $1000 mark on my DEC matching gift form
    for last year's PMC, I asked another DEC employee to sign a form
    for all of the remaining contributors, and sent in that form with the
    list of contributors/badge numbers.
    
    I also used matching gift as part of my deposit...so it does work.
    
    if you let them do it themselves, you might miss out on your
    heavy-hitter t-shirt :^)
    
    regarding the route...apparently, they change it slightly every year
    based on the road conditions, traffic patterns, etc.  the only thing
    that is constant is that the PMC route goes from Sturbridge to
    Provincetown.

    This will be my 7th year in the PMC.  The previous summaries with 
    regards to donations are pretty much on target.  Each year I call
    the Matching Gifts Coordinator, Celia Therrien, MSO-B14 PMROAD::
    223-4277.  She is very helpful and will clarify the procedures.
    As far as the fund raiser itself, I have never seen any event, a
    fundraiser or a commercial one, that is better organized.  In the
    years that I participated, there have been heat waves, monsoons 
    and cold, all of which Billy Starr and his PMC staff have adapted
    to quite well.
    The effectively 200 mile ride in 2 days is taxing.  A rider should
    prepare for this or it will be gruelling.  There is a party-like
    atmosphere on saturday night, but sunday starts very early, ~5am.
    All the while, the group is reminded why the ride happens: for 
    Dana Farber!  Sign up, collect as much as you can, and you'll have
    a very positive experience.

|  |     This is my first time to ever do anything of this magnitude. I've been
    riding for as long as I can remember, but just for fun and usually
    solo. I did happen to see the program back in dec. on it and it looked
    like a lot of fun and a great cause. I'm still waiting for my kit so
    I can start getting pledges. Someone asked what the route is that 
    we will be doing, can someone post in here as to what roads the 
    course goes. I haven't been able to find it anywhere, I'm curious
    as to how they get there, at least to the bridge at the Cape.

I know this does not answer your question specifically, but it will give you an 
idea.  The PMC travel on "backroad" for the most part.  To try and every right
and left would take quite a while.
  
Beginning in Sturbridge at the Host Resort (formerly the Sheraton) Saturday,
we will travel 109 miles, with water stops ever 20 miles or so.  The ride 
will takes us through Charlton, Oxford, Sutton, Douglas, Uxbridge, Mendon, 
Bellingham, Franklin, Norfolk, Foxborough, Easton (our lunch stop, at 
approx. 63 miles), W.Bridgewater, Middleboro, Carver, Wareham and 
Bourne.

|  | Well I did it!  My average speed was 3 mph more than my goal of 12 mph.  
It wasn't fast or pretty but I did ride the whole 192 mile. 
If you did the PMC 92 I would like to know.  more importantly if you plan to 
doit again in 93 I'd like to know.  I'm about as sore as I think i could ever 
get right now and I Will Do it again.  I saw one person with a great shirt on
that said PMC 1979 - until it's for fun. I belive that just about says it for me 
I think that I will continue to meet the Challenge as long as I'm able.
If you did it in the past or plan to do it next year. send me mail, I'd like to
get a feel for the depth of participitation from Digital.

	I realized today has a dark cloud over it.  I hope this message
	will give you something positive to think about today and in the

	Yesterday, Sun DEC 6th the Pan-Mass Challenge held it's 13th annual
	check presentation at the Chestnut Hill General Cinema.
	The overflow crowd was treated to speeches by various dignitaries
	from the Dana-Farber, Jimmy Fund and the Pan-Mass Challenge.  We 
	also heard from a 2 year rider who's daughter underwent bone marrow 
	transplant treatment at the Dana-Farber center at the age of 2 and
	a half.  Now, his daughter age 12, he rides to give back what the 
	center gave him.  
	This past Spring I set a personal goal of $5,000.  Knowing the 
	economy was "tight" I figured if I came close I would be happy.
	By the time I sent in my final contributions I was thrilled that 
	with your support I exceeded my goal with a total of $5,265.
	
	The 1992 Pan-Mass Challenge had the same result.  Having set a goal
	of $1.7 million.  The PMC was hoping to exceed the 1991, $1.55 
	million contribution by some $150 thousand.  Not only was the $1.7 
	reached, the amount staggered even those in attendance. 
	Equaling nearly 25% of the annual funds received by the Jimmy Fund,
	The 1992 Pan-Massachusetts Challenge presented the Jimmy Fund with 
	a check for ...............
			$ 1 . 9  Million  !!!!!!!!
