2200.0. "Campy Ergopower/Shimano Drivetrains: Do they mix?" by DECWET::SCOTT (Never had it, never will.) Sun Mar 01 1992 20:40

Has anyone had any experience mixing Campy Ergopower brake/shift levers
with Shimano Hyperglide/Superglide drivetrains? I was going to buy the
Ultegra STI levers, but I see the Campy levers (supposedly C-record)
advertised by Bike Nashbar for $315 (only $30 more than Ultegra STI
from Colorado Cyclist. Of course, I won't get a redundant set of
    brakes).

The Campy levers are a little lighter and they allow cleaner, aero
cable routing. They're also spec'd to work with a 7-speed cluster.
The STI levers, on the other hand, are reputed to work with a 7-speed
cluster, despite Shimano's insistence on 8-speed, and might be a little
hardier in a crash, since the whole lever is designed to pivot inward.

No experience. But if I were you I'd be very wary of trying to mix components
like that. You wouldn't be happy to spend $300 on brake levers only to find
they didn't *quite* work properly.

I'd say that you should stick to the Ultegras. You know they'll work (I'm
sure you'll have no trouble using them with 7-speed Hyperglide, Shimano
just want us all to lash out on new equipment rather than keep on with
older stuff). Plus those "redundant" brakes might come in handy some time.
Can't have too much equipment, can you?

..if you take the plunge and go with Campy (and they don't just
quite work) give me a call and we can negotiate the price. I'll
help you out so you don't have to buy more Campy components...
      - say, half price -

More seriously, I, too, would also doubt that mixing these two
gruppos would be in your best interests...the lottery may be a
    safer bet.

P.S. IF you need to off-load your campy purchase, look me up. I
will be buying some in the very near future.
