John,
I work in Reading, U.K. so I can't really comment on the prices. However, I
would strongly recommend you buy a bike in the U.S. if at all possible. For
example, I bought a Cannondale for 450, including VAT and Customs, which would
have been 800 here. The only caveat is if you are not sure of what you are
looking for. I had already narrowed my choices down to two bikes and it took me
over a week to make up my mind!
Make sure you are dealing with a good shop. Get some recommendations from
people who live in the area as to the places to shop at and stick with them.

I don't know where you get the $40 figure. On international flights, you are
allowed two pieces of luggage as a general rulke. I had no trouble bringing a
boxed bike as my second piece of checked luggage. For peace of mind, I would
recommend getting the shop to pack the bike into a cardboard bike box for you.
After all, they probably have lots of them lying around and have the tools and
experience to do it quickly.
So, if you feel confident that you know what bike you want, and are ready to do
the usual mechanical updates to keep it in tune, go for it. On the other hand,
if you want the support of a local bike shop as you get used to your new steed,
buy locally. After all, it is not reasonable to turn up with a bike they didn't
sell you asking for help.
Some people are not happy with fine tuning the trueness of the wheels,
adjusting the cables, and generally getting stuck into the mechanical bits that
keep your bike happy. If you are of that sort, I think it is worth the extra
cash to keep your local bike shop happy. For myself, I couldn't justify
spending an extra 350 for that back up.
I hope this helps,
Tim

| I'm going to be in Cannes, France next week. Can anyone recommend
a bike shop where I could find some Mavic parts and a new French
stem for my Peugeot PX-10?
(I need a 80mm or so stem, and the triple conversion for a Mavic
crank).
Thanks,
Barry
