Most of the time and the key word is most! If you stay within the
same brand of components, the Chain rings should work on the cranks,
So Shimano to Shimano should work....

SG = "Super Glide"
Superglide chainrings are round. As in, non-biopace (non-oval).
What you need to check is something called the "bolt circle".
If this value is the same on both chainrings, then, wowsers...

| Given the same bolt circle, you can mix Super Glide with non Super
Glide. I think it's only the big ring that matters anyway in
a double because it has teeth slightly cut to help shifting and I can't
see how that can help the small ring.

Thanks, that's the info I was looking for.
The bolt circle is the same for Ultegra and the Exage chainrings
(also for Ultegra and 105, since I'm changing to round rings
on my bike as well).
