2144.1 | more on DEC's interest | ULTRA::WITTENBERG | Uphill, Into the Wind | Wed Dec 11 1991 19:27 | 42 |
| Here's the mail from Doug Mink at BABC. At his request I have
deleted the name of the person in DEC. I have volunteered to be
the contact. My comments are indented, Doug's mail is not.
It would help if you send me mail if you commute, stating how
often you commute, to which facility, and how far you ride. If you
can let me know where you keep your bike that would also help. If
your storage is against the rules, let me know that, and I will
not release that information.
I will collate the data and post it here when it seems to all be
in.
The person we're working with has some corporate responsibilities for
encouraging alternative commuting methods. The impetus apparently comes
from DEC operations outside of Massachusetts, but he is interested in
starting a company-wide program. I was interested to learn that there
are bikeracks on some of DEC's vanpool vehicles. At this stage, we're
getting started by collecting statistics. The next step is uncertain,
as is the role of the BABC. A commuting committee of the BABC is meeting
Monday January 13 at our office, and we'd like suggestions on what we should
tell DEC. You're invited to attend, and to pass on the invitation to other
bike commuters inside DEC. I'd like to hand over coordination to an
enthusiastic insider who will stay in contact with the BABC and DEC
I think that the time is not yet ripe to inundate him with suggestions for
improvements in DEC's bicycle environment, but he might need help in getting
surveys out and tabulated.
-Doug
The meeting is at 7pm on Monday, 13 January at the BABC office.
Thanks,
The BABC office is at 214A Broadway in Cambridge. The entrance is actually
on Moore St., which intersects Broadway two blocks toward Harvard from the
Draper Labs. There is a Sunoco station across Broadway from the building
in which we rent the basement. If I were coming from the west, I'd take
Route 2 to Alewife Brook Pkwy. to Mass. Ave. to Somerville Ave. in Porter
Square, then right on Beacon which turns into Hampshire. Turn right on
Columbia, Windsor, or Clark after passing through Inman Square, then left
onto Broadway. You don't need a resident permit to park on Broadway or
Moore St.

| Sandy Hoyt (caldec::hoyt) is the alternative commuting coordinator
for DEC sites in Palo Alto, California. She's been somewhat involved
in local bicycling issues. You may want to contact her for more info.
She'd probably be interested in corporate policies in this area.

2144.3 | Bikes indoors needed for program success | LATARE::HANAUER | Mike...~Bicycle~to~Ice~Cream | Sat Dec 14 1991 17:57 | 17 |
| David (and others),
Met Doug at the Charles River Wheelmen holiday party last nite.
BABC is a bit overwhelmed at the request and need further DEC
employee support.
I'm real happy that this has come about, initiated by DEC.
Actually, still not sure I believe it.
Personaly, I feel it is VERY important that DEC have a policy
allowing bikes secure inside and/or in offices for people to feel
warm about bike commuting.

P.S. I am at ESMAIL::HANAUER in spite of the node you see at the
top of this reply. The network database is way out of date!

2144.4 | Storage is the issue | ULTRA::WITTENBERG | Uphill, Into the Wind | Sun Dec 15 1991 15:16 | 12 |
| So far I have 6 responses.
Most of the people are riding about 10-12 miles each way, with one
riding double that. Showers seem to be available, but bike storage
is a problem for some. I think that's the major issue to start
with.
I'm sure there's a note in here with a lot more discussion of
commuting to work at DEC, but I haven't found it yet. I'll keep
looking.

Subject: WORLD-CLASS COMMUTING DAY
The Commuter Transportation Department would like to invite you to
become a committee member and participate in this year's World-Class
Commuting Day Exhibition on Wednesday, May 13, 1992.
World-Class Commuting Day is recognized nationally to manifest creative
excellence in the corporate, private and public sectors to improve
commuter mobility for the daily work trip.
The first meeting scheduled to begin planning for this year's event is
Wednesday, February 26, 1992, at 9 A.M. in Northboro. Therefore,
please confirm your attendance by Friday, February 14, 1992. If you
are unable to attend, please send a representative from your
organization to participate on your behalf.
This is a great opportunity for the corporation to demonstrate our
commitment to help improve our environment, by providing Commuter
Transportation Alternatives to our employees and members of the
Transportation Management Association in the City of Marlboro.
Digital is currently participating in a Transportation Management
Association with the Marlboro Chamber of Commerce and Caravan for
Commuters Inc., a Massachusetts Transportation Organization, to
establish an employer based commuter transportation network. The
objective of this network is to increase ridesharing among employers
and to encourage use of alternatives to reduce peak hour traffic along
the I-495 and Route 20 corridors.
Mark your calendar today for World-Class Commuting Day!
Regards,
David M. Costanzo
