I am in the market to build a set of faster wheels for my tandem. Currently the Santana has 48 spoke, Phil Wood hubs, with drum brake. I would like a lighter set of wheels when we are not pulling the trailer or otherwise need the drum brake. I will need 135MM spacing in the rear wheel. Questions: o How many spokes should I go with? 40 is my best guess (I weigh 170 and my wife 115) o Has anyone seen Deore/XT, Suntour XC Pro come in 40 spoke? o Will 36 spoke wheels possibly work? Can I get axles long enough for campy/old dura ace hubs? Thanks steve

I got a set of wheels from Wheelsmiths. The rims are Sun tandem rims (40 spokes). The name of the hubs escape me presently but I don't know if I would recommend them as we were able to bend the rear axle quite quickly. Next set of hubs would probably be cassette as their is less "axle only area" to take the stress. I would stay with 40 spokes. I would also look into a new design that I read in an old Bicycle Guide issue (the one with the profile on Eddy Mercks's record-breaking track bike). The man that designed the titanium stem for Eddy's famous bike has a new design for rims and/or spokes that gives more strengths without increasing the weight. Let me dig the issue up. Eric

re:.1 I have not seen 40 spoke hubs with cassette system. Please let me know if you see any around. Phil Wood's bolt on rear hub is real strong. The hub is bolted on by a 6mm bolt (not a nut) that threads internally into the axle. As a result, the axle is larger, thus stronger. If only he could incorporate his design with a hyperglide cassette system... steve

I have had my tandem since last sping. Since it gets used for racing and fast club rides I chose to go with lighter than usual tandem wheels. Both front and rear have 36 hole Mavic MA2 rims, 14g. spokes and Specialized high flange quick release hubs. Absolutely no problems to date. I have not even had to true the wheels yet. The highest total rider weight was 330 pounds for a century that was done in September. For tires I have been using Continental Super Ultrasports 700x25 pumped up to 135 psi. No flats yet either. The problem I see with 40 hole wheels is the replacement of the rims in the event of their destruction. Most bike shops do not carry 40 hole rims. 36 and 48 are readily available. When you are a long way from home the loss of a 40 hole rim could mean the loss of a day or two of your precious time. Norm |
