2076.0. "bike for a 10 year old...???" by CECV03::LERRA () Fri Sep 13 1991 17:42

My 10 year old son is interested (more like , frothing at the mouth!!)
in buying himself a new bike with his paper route earnings. I would be
very interested in hearing from anyone who has advice regarding this.
He has seen bikes from Schwinn (Frontier), Ross, and Sterling. All have
the same number of gears, and the same deraileur (sp?) and shifting
components (Shimano SIS). The Ross and Sterling come from a 'toy'
store, while the Schwinn was seen at Chelmsford Cyclery (a bike shop).
The Schwinn is also at the top end of his price range, at $209. The
others are between $190 and $200.
Being a fairly sensible (for a 10 year old!) boy, he has so far decided
on the Schwinn because the salesman explained the advantages of having
a bike shop which would service the bike, should it ever be neccesary.
Also, Chelmsford Cyclery offers two free check ups, within 12 months of
    purchase, with any bike.
FWIW....He has always taken VERY good care of his bikes, so I don't
mind him spending this much money for a good one. He is also a small
(4'4") boy so the 24 inch frame on each of these bikes should fit him
for the next few years at least.

thanks in advance for your advice/comments,

I suspect most people here will advise you to go with the bike shop, for the
reasons the salesman outlined, as well as some assurances of good fitting, and
correct assembly. At $209 vs $190 and $200, it may be possible to bargin
the price down a little, or the dealer might be willing to throw in an extra
like a water bottle, or a lock or something. Thereby making the price a little
more comfortable. Is dad going to throw in a helmet?

I have only nice things to say about the
Chelmsford Bike shop....my wife and I bought our
bikes there, as did several friends of ours...

The owner will recommend less expensive options if
he feels that they do the job as well or better..

	Maintenance is excellent...

	(Don't forget the helmet....)

    save money
if you know how to work on this simple machines maybe look into used
bikes ( if your kid does not mind) I recently purcased a specialized
sport atb for 200 dollars it was 500 new , also no matter how good
a bike store or any department store could be you must know you will
be paying top dollar . the trick is to find out how to get the best for
the least . maybe mail order at the least. re helmets first make sure
your kid is willing to wear it before you buy him one . mine wears it
when we go out but are dead against it for going to school with them
on. also they must be worn and fitted properly .
    good luck
