2066.0. "Touring Down Under" by ULTRA::WITTENBERG (Uphill, Into the Wind) Wed Sep 04 1991 10:12

We are contemplating a bike trip to Australia or New Zealand for
the first three weeks of November. We'd be riding a tandem road
    bike.

Any suggestions for areas we have to go to? Areas to avoid?
Suggested itineraries? Other information? (We've just started to
think about this, so we don't know what we're getting into yet.)

What sort of touring did you have in mind? Carrying tents cooking eqpt
    etc or staying in hostels.

Two areas I've toured around and really enjoyed are North Queensland
(Cairns, Port Douglas, Cape Tribulation, Atherton Tablelands) and the
Snowy Mountains (in New South Wales - about 400 km from Sydney).

A word of warning - car drivers in Aus can be very arrogant.

I'll see if I can find the addresses of some organisations in Aus who
may be able to give you some more info.

PS Maybe you could post this in the QUOKKA:OZ conference, somebody may
    have some more ideas.

We would stay in hostels, B&Bs, or Inns. I don't think I can
convince my wife to carry a tent on the bike, at least not yet.

I'll try the QUOKKA::OZ conference, thanks for that pointer.

My wife and I found NZ to be much like the US for tandem touring, in
that there are lots of great places to go, but your ability to get to
some of them is seriously impaired.

My biggest complaint was NZ-style gravel roads - gravel there is often
the size of your fist, and gradients can be severe. Driving them is
bad enough - a road tandem would be, uh, at least extremely challenging.

That being said, there are a number of fabulous loops, particularly on
the South Island. The classic reference is a two-volume set called
"Bicycle Touring on the North Island" and "... South Island", or
something to that effect. They are published in NZ, but are
occaisionally available in the US. There are several domestically
published knock-offs that are very poor. I can get exact info if
    you're interested.

Another option for lodging are commercial campgrounds - they're nothing
like the US variety, and often have small cabins as well as tent sites.
Every one we stayed in was clean, pleasant, and inexpensive.

We thoroughly enjoyed NZ. Its a great spot to travel.

I have a DEC Aussie friend (Canberra) that sends me the "Australian
Cyclist" magazine, basically a cross between Bicycling and LAW
publications. I will send it along.

Stay out of Sydney and the other large cities, traffic is terrible.

A member of my club is from Australia, and I talked to him tonight (but
I mis-remembered when you were thinking of going). He recommends
Tasmania (as popular for cycling as Vermont is around here); New South
    Wales; and Queensland.

2066.6We're going to NZ, South IslandULTRA::WITTENBERGUphill, Into the WindTue Nov 05 1991 13:4310
Well, we're going to leave Sunday, and will be there for three
weeks. We're taking a New Zealand Pedaltours tour of the South
Island, starting and ending in Christchurch and going
counterclockwise from there. The route doesn't go very far north
    of Christchurch.

I'm really looking forward to this, and am getting pretty close to
being fully packed and ready to go.
