2048.1 | Oranges vs Oranges not Apples | ORIENT::HUI | | Wed Aug 21 1991 17:25 | 14 |
| Chad Roberts make his bikes out of Reynold tubing. We sold quite a few
of them this year and the customer seems very happy with them. The
things that you look for in comparing custom stuff (after you
determined the angles) is 1) Materials being used and technology
involved. 2) The assembly and finishing work (Joints, dropouts,
stays, etc..) 3) Paint quality 4) Overall quality control of the
builder to name just a few. There are a lot more stuff but you have
to decide on what is important to you. You have to compare Oranges
against Oranges and not Apple against oranges.
Good Luck,

2048.2 | Elite Sport = semi-production | NOVA::HORN | Steve Horn, Database Systems | Thu Aug 22 1991 10:32 | 18 |

The Mooney Elite Sport is sort of a 'production' bike from Mooney...the
only customizations you get are colors and braze-ons...the geometry is
set. For several hundred dollars more you get a frame customized to
your 'architecture'. While I would very much expect that his
frame/paint should be better than the Roberts...frame geometry is
amazingly similar. Mooney uses SL for his Sport, while the Roberts
is 531 ST.
I guess what I was looking for is where the "Law of diminishing Return"
occurs...but also I was looking for anyones experience with the newer
Roberts frames...the lug work and finish was really quite nice. I
remember Roberts from way back, (I took a decade off from cycling!)
...back when I bought my now ancient R.E.W.Reynolds frame...8^)
Thanks,
Steve

Peter's painting is done by CycleArt in a San Diego suburb. They
really can do ANYTHING. I recently saw pictures of some of their more
wild jobs. One mountain bike had the components blacked out, with
the frame painted and textured to look like bamboo - ridges and
everything. Back to Mooney, he does batches by size. If you need a
58, for example, and get to him before he starts doing all of the 58s,
it will be relatively cheap to get him to substitute tubing and make
other changes. If he's working on some other size and you want a
special change, he can't use what's on the rack, and has to do a one-off
for you - resulting in a "special" price.

2048.4 | No wild paint jobs for moi! | NOVA::HORN | Steve Horn, Database Systems | Thu Aug 22 1991 16:41 | 11 |

Well, I'm stopping by Belmont Wheelworks tomorrow morning to get closer
look at Peter's "stock" frames. I'm not particularly oddly
proportioned...so perhaps I'll get lucky - 8^). I still haven't
convinced myself to spend the extra money...the Robert's looked very
well made...at half the price! I'm not fast enough to get away with a
real WILD paint job...I prefer not to stand out too too much!

Ah, size is 54 cm. I did take a look at the amazingly expensive
selection at Belmont Wheelworks...They REALLY wanted me to buy
something in the $1200 range! Yikes!! Well, it happens I was in a
local shop last week getting a couple spare tubes when I spied a
Bianchi frameset hanging there gathering dust...the shop had sat on it
for three years...it was Bianchi's top of the line then...Celeste
green, SL tubing, chromed stays, chromed fork, front derail braze-on
etc etc...plus a c-record headset...sold it to me for $450 with the
headset. Now I need to decide on components!!
