2029.0. "Bike trail in Lexington?" by KAHALA::PRESTON () Wed Aug 07 1991 17:23

    I've noticed signs along Worthen Rd in lexington, indicating that there
    is a bike trail in the area. Has anyone actually ridden this trail? How
    long is it? Is it safe (no sharp turns, etc)? Would it be good for a
    family ride in an afternoon?

    Thanks,

    Ed

2029.1Good for a family ride only!CTHQ1::FREREEllas Danzan SolasThu Aug 08 1991 10:027
    Hi,

    I've ridden the trail with my daughter and son (6 and 4) last year. It's
    not a very long trail but a good one for kids. Not recommended to tear
    around in a Merlin!! I wizzed by a jogger and he shouted obscenities at
    me for cycling on the path!! I don't understand why runners prefer to
    wreck their knees on pavement rather than run on grass.

    Whenever I run on grass I end up wrecking an ankle from some obscure
    unevenness in the surface.

    Re .1

    Thanks for the input... sounds like what I was hoping for.

    If it's a designated a bike path, how can some jogger justify hollering
    obsenities at you for cycling on it? Or was he upset because you were
    going too fast for his preference?

    Re jogging/running

    I ran several times a week for over two years, and after a while my
    knees creaked so badly that others could hear them when I walked up
    stairs! Now that I've been away from running for about the same amount
    of time, my knees are a lot quieter! (I also believe the creaking had
    something to do with running at a pace that was not as easy on my knees
    as a slightly faster but smoother pace might have been - I just wasn't
    up to maintaining that speed, though).

2029.4Lexington has a number of bike pathsFSTTOO::HANAUERMike...~Bicycle~to~Ice~CreamWed Aug 14 1991 13:2019
Lexington actually has a number of bike paths, although none are
restricted only to bikes. Walkers and joggers may be found on some
of them but not generally a problem for moderate speeds. They
probably range from to 1 mile long individually, although they can
be strung together to form an interesting loop which includes roads
as well.

I have led a Charles River Wheelmen ride of about 10 miles which
includes most of these bike paths, and have a map of the route.

If you send me mail including your physical location, I'll be glad
to forward a copy.

Also, work is about to begin on the commuter bike path between
Alewife Station in Cambridge, through Arlington, Lexington and to
Bedford. A year from now, we should have a great new alternative
for cycling in that area.
