2009.0. "info needed on touring New England in fall" by CXCAD::EDMONDS (Diane Edmonds, Colorado Springs) Sat Jul 20 1991 15:37

My husband and I are attempting to plan a fall vacation in Vermont
with our bikes (road bikes). Actually, this does not necessarily
have to be limited to Vermont... maybe I should say New England.

We'd like to ride about 50-75 miles per day, for 5 days or so, and
stay at inns and have someone transport our luggage each day to the
    next inn.

I'm hoping someone can answer these questions:

    1) When is the optimal time to see the famous "fall colors"?

    2) Does anyone have any recommendations of bicycle touring companies
        that operate in this way?

    3) Are there any organized tours happening during this time-frame, that
we could sign up for? (Similar to "Pedal the Peaks" here in Colorado).

Any other information would be welcome. We are both completely unfamiliar
with any part of New England except the Boston area and Connecticut.

    Thanks.
     - Diane

You may want to check with Vermont Bike Tours in Woodstock Vermont.
They conduct a whole spectrum of tours. Sorry, I don't have their
    phone number.
2009.2Peak Fall Foliage would be late Sept./early Oct. ICS::WARDMon Jul 22 1991 16:517
Fall foliage peaks in Boston by about October 15. I'd say best times
in Vermont would be the last weekend in September. (It's better to be
there before peak rather than after. The state is really gorgeous,
particularly the towns, which are full of colonial houses. Vermont
bicycle tours also has a good reputation.

I would definitly reccommend going with VBT. My wife and I
did a tour with them at the end of May. The guides were
great. The tour route was interesting. The Inn we stayed
at was excellent. The food was great. The only thing
is they are a bit pricey. If you want to send me your mail
stop I think I might still have a catalogue at home and will
send it to you if I can find it.

2009.5Lake Champlaign Tour with VBTAXIS::MOLLINTue Jul 23 1991 13:1515
If you pick up a copy of Bicycling magazine you can find ads for
numerous companies offering tours. About 4 years ago I took a 5
day tour with Vermount Bicycle Touring during the fall folliage
season. They have tours set up in different parts of the state to
take advantage of the peak colors in each area. They also have two
levels of difficulty for their tours and 2-4 routes each day which
vary in length and difficulty. I went on one in the Lake Champlaign
area in Northwest Vermont. The scenery was great although the weather
that year caused early changes and falling off of the leaves, so
some of the days were not overly colorful. But, they can't control
the weather. It also rained hard one whole day and we still had
to bike to the next inn. Also Vermont Ain't Flat! If you call them
they will give you all the details you need to plan a great vacation.
