1971.0. "SIS upgrade" by SOLVIT::CAMPBELL_S () Mon Jun 17 1991 11:23

I'm currently planning on upgrading to 7 spd SIS from my
dadblamitovershift Campy Super Record 6 spd. What I'd like to do is use
Dura Ace but that gets pricey. One person I spoke with says to just use the
Dura Ace shift levers, and get the Ultegra rear derailure. He claims that
it is the shift levers that give Dura ace the crisper shifts, and that the
rear derailures are identical except for finish. Has anyone else done this???
Are they compatible?? Colorado cyclist says "yes", but Bicyling magazine
says "no". So what I'm looking for is someone else with this setup working.

I'd say that it's most unlikely that Dura-Ace derailleurs are just the
same as Ultegra bar the finish. If so, Mr Shimano must be making a
mint out of us cyclists (he probably is anyway).

I'd also say it's most unlikely that it's the Dura-Ace levers that
give better shifting, if indeed Dura-Ace gives better shifting than
Ultegra in any case. The extra money you spend on Dura-Ace goes into
making a more durable product with a better finish.

My advice is, forget about Dura-Ace and just go all Ultegra.

    Stew,

Each model of shifters are a little different from one and another.
This is because each index moves teh cable a certain distance known as
Cable Travel (CT). The CT of the Dura Ace is just a little different
then the CT of a 600 or 105SC shifters. This is why Shimano does not
recommend using Dura Ace shifters with no Dura Ace R Derailluers and
vice versa. But since we all like to try a cheap route first. I will be
trying to use a 600 shifter with a DA derailluer this week. I will let
you know how I make out.

As for the workmanship of the 600 verses Dura Ace. Dura Ace is made to
a tighter tolerance and the system is smoother a little. Where the Dura
Ace stuff is really noticable over the 600 stuff is in the BB and hubs.
The cones and bearing is a much higher quality. The 600 Ultegra BB
really stinks. The seal is really tight. I even prefer the 105SC over
the 600 BB. But that is just me.

Stew,

I've been using Ultegra shifters and derailleurs since they came out, and have
been quite satisfied with the shifting performance, even with aero-bar mounted
shifters, and their durability. And you know how much I ride (used to?) and
that I really don't maintain my equipment very well.

I'd recommend staying with Ultegra and save some money.
