1904.0. "*Strong* rims?" by DOOZER::PENNEY (Richard Penney 830 4114 @RKA 1/19) Mon Apr 15 1991 13:51

I've hunted through this conference but can only find some isolated product
references, so...

- can anyone supply a league table of the strongest 700c clincher rims?

From earlier notes it looks as though Mavic MA40 are a good bet. Are these
actually the strongest rim available? What about Campag - or any others?

Any info. on relative prices also appreciated.

Thanks,
Richard

1904.1MA40's TREATED ME WELLWMOIS::C_GIROUARDTue Apr 16 1991 08:145
     I've been running them for 3 years for training and the area that
    I live in has very bad roads. I've only had to have them trued
    twice (approx. 16k+).

    I vote for the 36 spoke MA40's as well! I love mine.

    My Cannondale came with Sun Mistral rims. They weren't optimal. I
    finally moved my MAVIC MA40s from my Trek and have had no problems
    since.

    	I weigh even more than Dave. I'm at 270 or so.

    	I use 36-hole Campy Omega Strada rims. I also use 14 gauge
    	spokes and Shimano 600 hubs.

    	I rode into a storm drain last year at speed. No damage
    	to the wheels, although the headset seems to have suffered
    	some.

          What Scott doesn't mention is that he can change
       street lights without a ladder. (6" 5" or so?)

           BTW Scott, Lynda bought the Trek. Thanks
                      for the input.

    The Mavic MA40 clinchers are one of their most popular Training Rims
    and we don't usually get return on them are building them up for
    customers. If you plan to build your own set, I definitely would
    recommend Mavic to start off with. They have the reputation to be the
    most true out of the box.

    I also have a pair of Mavic Open 4 CD and haven't had any problems with
    those either.

    The only real problem with Mavic is the high cost. I think the weak dollar
    has something to do with it but you will see a 25% price increase this
    year with Mavic rims.
